New loan signing Hal Robson-Kanu looks set to go straight into the Southend squad to face Brighton at Roots Hall on Friday. The 19-year-old winger had a three-month loan-spell with the club last season and has rejoined Steve Tilson's men on an initial one-month deal.
The boss will also be sweating on the fitness of striker James Walker after he sustained a thigh injury on the opening day of the season against Peterborough.
Walker has failed to feature in any games since.
Midfielder Alan McCormack (knee) again misses out and is expected to be stranded on the sidelines for another three weeks.
Southend were 2-0 victors the last time these two sides met last April, with Mark Gower and Adam Barrett helping the Shrimpers to all three points.
