West Brom boss Tony Mowbray says the deal to sign Real Mallorca midfielder Borja Valero for £4.75million has still to be completed.
Valero's agent insisted 72 hours ago that a four-year deal had been agreed for the ex-Real Madrid player.
But Mowbray said on Thursday: "The deal is not done. I don't want to eulogise about a player who has not signed in case it doesn't happen.
"But it is no secret we admire the player and we'd like to tie something up.
"We've watched him for a while and he has got the technical ability to help our squad."
Baggies midfielder Robert Koren is back in the squad after training all week following a knee problem suffered in pre-season training.
Defender Neil Clement could also be available again after the next international break after also being laid low by a knee setback in the build-up to the new campaign.
Mowbray added: "It's hard on players when they spend a lot of time getting fit in the summer and then pick up injuries.
"But Robert is fit. He has trained all week and he will be part of the squad. As for Neil, I would suggest he will be back playing after the next international break."
