The 26-year-old Frenchman won in a time of four hours, 54 minutes and 58 seconds to beat 21-year-old Australian Wesley Sulzberger of Française des Jeux and CSC's Danish rider Chris-Anker Sorensen into second and third respectively.

An early attack by Yann Huguet was followed by Niko Eeckhout, Anthony Roux and Troels Vinther.

But after 60 km the peloton caught up, and a group led by the more famous names of Robbie McEwen, Stuart O'Grady and Kim Kirchen attempted a breakaway.

It was short-lived though, and at Estrée-Blanche the groups converged and a series of attacks and counter-attacks saw nine other riders pull away from the peloton.

Ten kilometres from the finish, McEwen attempted to reel them back, but his efforts were in vain as Frederic Guesdon and Thomas Voekler moved to the head of the race.

The final sprint was a photo-finish, and Bonnet pipped Sulzberger and Sorensen to win his first race since a stage one victory at Paris-Correze 2005.
