Davis Cup - Great Britain relegated to third tier

Eurosport - Mon, 21 Sep 11:42:00 2009

Great Britain have been relegated to the third tier of Davis Cup tennis after losing their Europe/Africa Group 1 relegation play-off with Poland 3-2 in Liverpool.

TENNIS Daniel Evans of Great Britain aka Dan Evans - 0

Going into the day 2-1 down, Britain knew they needed to win both reverse singles matches to salvage the tie and Andy Murray gave John Lloyd's side a chance with a comfortable 6-3 6-4 6-3 win over Jerzy Janowicz.

However, Dan Evans's (pictured) miserable Davis Cup debut continued in the deciding match as he was outclassed by Michal Przysiezny 6-2 6-1 7-5 despite being ranked 375 places higher than his opponent.

Britain will now play in Europe/Africa Group 2 next season alongside sides such as Egypt, Lithuania and Ireland.

There was plenty of speculation on Saturday night that Murray would not be fit enough to play his third game in three days, but if his wrist was hurting him there was little evidence of it as he quickly dispatched his talented young opponent Janowicz.

The world number three needed just a solitary break in the first two sets then broke in the first and final games of the third to win the match.

That put the pressure on 19-year-old Evans but the Englishman came up woefully short against Przysiezny, who once again looked a much better player than his lowly ranking suggests.

The Pole served excellently and exploited an error-strewn performance from Evans.

A break to love in the fourth game of the match gave him the momentum and another break sealed the first set 6-2.

The second set was completely one-way traffic and two more breaks saw the Pole take it 6-1.

It looked like Evans was set for complete humiliation in the final set as he was broken again in the first game but Przysiezny tightened up and his opponent took full advantage.

The Englishman broke straight back then even went a break up as he claimed a 4-2 advantage. However he then began to show nerves of his own in the very next game and was broken back.

The death knell was sounded with Evans serving at 5-5. He put a poor volley into the net on the first point then Przysiezny fired three consecutive winners for a break to love.

There were no signs of nerves from the Pole in the final game as he served out to 15 to clinch the victory.

The defeat means Britain cannot return to the World Group until 2012 at the earliest.

  4. well done, Wendy. Did you see how Andy sets up cones to serve against, not satisfied unless he hits them again and again? Set the situation up on the free all weather courts and if s.o. says anything, say that as Andy practices footy to improve his tennis, your son is practicing his tennis to improve his free footy... :-)

  5. Hi tennis britain!
I'm tennis coach from poland (since 2004 in scotland)and have been looking for tennis club to join since I came to UK.your problem is andy murray who is very talented guy and whatever he achieved or will achieve its belongs to him. unfortunately all lta and associated coaches they proud and arogant like they did his succes themselves.
all tennis clubs looking for young guy like dan evans to be coaching adults in their clubs. all these amateur leagues are more important then kids,
that is why you have only one top player at time. Meanwhile lta and its tennis centre coaches will waste all aegon money foe their own benefits, houses cars travel and UK will wait another 60 years for next top player as andy. its a shame having so many facilities so many kids
to waste it for a few wins in a middle of nowhere senior league.

And re the rest of your post, sadly so true. One almighty task trying to change the mindset of the, as you rightly note, nasty, negative people who choose to comment here.

  7. good luck to your son Wendy and indeed,a slam win for Andy will boost the sport here no end. meanwhile I hope we will all be united in protecting anne keothavong and heather watson from the reactionary brigade as although the williamses in america show us what anybody can achieve, it sadly also teaches us what formidable enemies await them out there if and when they achieve notable success.

  8. good point you make crispyduck and, i will add that the excuse is rather tenuous nowadays as a lot of money has been poured into relatively poor areas in the last eight years so that anyone can take their children along and practice for free. Naturally there are still some aspects of the snobbery that is common in society generally but it is no more so in tennis and the situation is rapidly improving. It is very difficult to eradicate entrenched prejudices from unprogressive types of people (and nasty ones like you find on these boards) but thankfully they are a dying breed and more and more people will get the opportunity to play irrespective of their backgrounds, i think sam smith, baltasha, bogdanovic, keothavong and heather watson already come from not too privileged a background so progress has been evolving, albeit a bit slow.

  13. gwaporob: I played tennis to a decent level and can tell you that yes, it could be an expensive sport (if you let it) but it's not a posh sport unless you want it to be. The club I was in was very affordable. As a kid, when it came to buying things such as rackets and balls etc I did everything I could to earn money such as washing peoples cars, doing odd jobs, and even collecting glass bottles out of bins and taking them to ice-cream vans for the money back. My point IS that if you want something bad enough you will do it. I'm sure tiger woods wasn't given it on a plate and I know Andre Agassi wasn't. The problem isn't with the sport itself. It's with people like you and the British attitude. You and other people want to continually have a "them and us mentallity". You don't need to loads of money or the best equipment to play a sport ONLY the motivation to do it. Obviously you don't have that and while our nation has negative people like you we will never be a force in that sport.

  14. It's just amazing how the UK players just cannot seem to find a winning tennis combination, sure someone has to re-look at British Tennis and try to get it up to a higher level.

Free Tennis courts all over the place (2 down my street and about a dozen within 1/2 mile...and most of them deserted except for about 3 mos in the year (Boston weather you know)...yet is the US ranking better than England??..well a bit, okay...but right now it's European athletes all over (all right take the Williams out of the pix)...more tennis courts better players?? maybe, but it's far from being the case over here..
