Nottingham's Paul Daley made significant strides in the welterweight division with an upset win over Martin Kampmann (15-3) at UFC 103 in Dallas.
"Semtex" Daley (22-8-2), who was the replacement for Mike Swick, has a reputation as a great striker who is weak on the ground but was able to avoid every attempt Kampmann made to take him down.
A Daley with takedown defense would be dangerous for nearly everyone in the division. He was hammering Kampmann against the cage when ref Yves Lavigne stopped the fight, which didn't go over well with the crowd, which booed heavily.
But it was clear up close that Kampmann's eyes were glassy, even though he hadn't gone down.
"It was a very just decision," debutant Daley said. "The ref saw his eyes roll back a couple of times. He's worried about his health. It was a good stoppage."
"I love guys who step up as late replacements," White said. When asked if a Daley v Swick match could be made for a title shot, he answered: "Could be."
