Premier League - Managers: Hughes' time fury

Eurosport - Mon, 21 Sep 15:31:00 2009

Reaction from Sunday's Premier League action, with Manchester City boss Mark Hughes demanding a satisfactory explanation as to why so much injury time was played in the Manchester derby.

FOOTBALL 2009-2010 Premier League Manchester City Mark Hughes - 0

Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City

Alex Ferguson: "Sometimes you have a noisy neighbour. You cannot do anything about that. They will always be noisy. You just have to get on with your life, put your television on and turn it up a bit louder. Today the players showed their form. That is the best answer of all. The fact we made those mistakes probably made it the best derby game of all time. What would you rather have, a 6-0 win or the greatest derby of all time? I would prefer to win 6-0."

Mark Hughes: "I have not had a word with the referee yet but the fourth official tried to give me an explanation of sorts as I was questioning the amount of time added on even before the game finished. His explanation did not sit comfortably with me. He said a minute plus had been added because of our celebration. We scored on 90 minutes, the board was already up for four minutes, so Mr Wiley said he was going to add that minute on. The amount of time from when we scored to when we kicked-off was something like 45 seconds. He has got that wrong as well. It was 95 minutes 26 seconds. Obviously he has played too much time and we ended up playing 97 minutes. I just needed an explanation as to why so much time was needed."

Chelsea 3-0 Tottenham

Carlo Ancelotti: "We hope tomorrow we will have a precise diagnosis of the situation (with Didier Drogba). It is a calf injury but he felt that he had cramp. If it is cramp, it is good for us (but) I think we can play well without Didier... I don't know if Tottenham should have had a penalty, I am not a referee. I do not like to speak about the job of the referee. I prefer to speak about the match. It was very important to win this game. It was a derby and we played well against a very good team."

Harry Redknapp: "It was a nailed-on penalty but he (Keane) tried to stay up. They don't want people diving, but if he felt he dived, why didn't he give him a yellow or a red card? It's either a penalty or a red card. We had a diabolical penalty decision at Old Trafford last season when we were 2-0 up and he gave it. He apologised for that... Once we lost Ledley (King) there was no way we could deal with Didier Drogba. Ledley has done his hamstring. Bassong doesn't look too good, either. He got a bang on the head and his eye's all swollen up. I think the doctor has taken him to hospital with concussion."

Everton 3-0 Blackburn

David Moyes: "I enjoyed the result and the performance. At times we were very good. Blackburn made it difficult, particularly in the first half, but we were able to defend their set pieces. I think Saha is a terrific player and he's right up there with the best I've ever worked with. With the quality of the players we have, we're much better than we've shown so far."

Sam Allardyce: "I think we were poor to be honest. We've got no resilience away from home. We let ourselves down on set pieces and gave Everton an easy victory. We could have stopped two goals from a corner and a free-kick. We're not getting the results we need to avoid struggling this season. It's a disappointing result and a disappointing performance but its one we need to get over."

Wolves 2-1 Fulham

Mick McCarthy: "We won't win anything if we don't work hard. I thought it was a really good performance. We were energetic, we closed them down and pressed the ball really well. There have to be a lot of good performances for us to have won that game but I thought Christophe Berra was a difference class. In the last 10 minutes when they were throwing balls into the box he headed everything."

Roy Hodgson: "We left it late to start playing the football we should be playing. All credit to Wolves, their pressurising and controlled aggression made life difficult. We didn't deal with that very well at all, it's as simple as that. I don't think there was anything about our play as such, it was more we didn't do well against them. But I thought it was a performance, for 60 minutes, most unlike us. I've not seen us give the ball away or miss as many passes as much as we did in that game."

  1. Please, read the rules related to injury/added time a MINIMIUM of the time indicated on the 4th officals board will be played a MINIMUM, very clear in my mind.
City escaped, they had a battering in the 2nd half, reasonably equal in the 1st, but all in all, MU were far better in every dept (except in goalkeeping).
Long way to go before they can contemplate knocking MU off their perch, long way indeed.

  2. AS A PLAYER, MARK HUGHES BENEFITTED FROM DECISIONS IN FAVOUR OF MAN U. AS A MANAGER OF ANOTHER CLUB, HE IS ON THE RECEIVING END OF OFFICIATING IN FAVOUR OF MAN U. WHY CAN'T HE TAKE IT NOW? THE REFEREE SHOULD HAVE ADDED TEN MINUTES SO THAT MAN U COULD SCORE TWO MORE GOALS. WHAT IS GOOD FOR THE GOOSE SHOULD BE GOOD FOR THE GANDER

  3. to the gonners fan 542. what are you talking about, to say that city deserved at least a draw is a joke. man u gave them 2 goals and dominated the match and don't forget both teams are on the pitch for the same amount of time. but hey your a gonners fan with nothing to look forward too!!!!!!!!

  5. Post 541:

I think u r the one who got ur facts jumbled up. Did Mark Hughes complain before Owen scored that last goal? YES. If you saw the match and heard the commentator, Hughes was 'furious' when the game was played beyond the 4 minutes. (FACT)

Was there really that many injuries or time wasted that justified the 4 minutes added on in the first place? NO. (FACT)

Was it expected for the referee to blow the final whistle shortly after the 4 minutes is up? YES. (FACT)

Did City celebrate for more than 1 minute? NO. (FACT)

Have you ever heard of an additional extra time to cover up for loss of time due to celebration during an extra time period? NO. (FACT)

Did UTD get help from the referee/linesman/whatever? YES. (FACT and that's how they win championships)

PLease don't talk about Hughes not complaining had it been City who scored the goal. No manager will be that idiotic. I am a die-hard Arsenal fan and i hate Ade for kicking RVP's face a week ago but to say that UTd won cos they're good is way off mark. (FACT)

City deserved at least a draw but hey, the match was at Old Toilet. Who can blame City (or the even the referee for that matter)? (FACT)

    GuNNeR-4-LiFe!!!

  6. ALL CITY FANS MUST READ TO UNDERSTAND
Did anyone notice Mark Hughes moaning about the amount of injury time being played before united scored,? was he moaning in the 95th minute screaming at the referee to stop the game? NO BECAUSE HE WAS WAITING FOR CITY TO SCORE and only started on the referee when united scored, if city had scored would he be moaning today? NO *( thats fact)
Both teams played the extra 6 mins * (another fact)
