Blackwell praise for Henderson

Mon, 21 Sep 17:52:26 2009

Kevin Blackwell believes Darius Henderson will play a key role in Sheffield United's promotion bid this season.

Henderson, a £2million signing from Watford in the summer of 2008, scored his first goal of the season in Friday night's derby win over Sheffield Wednesday, but the 28-year-old adds much more than goals to Blackwell's outfit.

The Blades manager said: "Darius brings a lot of presence to our side and puts centre-halves under pressure even when he is not challenging for the ball.

"It has taken a while for him to score this time round, but he had seen two good `goals' chalked off that should not have been disallowed in previous matches.

"Add to that the fact that other players have not accepted chances that he has set up and you can understand why we miss him when he is not there."

  1. If Henderson gives away twenty fouls in a match then at least ten of them are not fouls. He has been on the end of some horrendous descisions when he has been pulled, held or run in to and the kick has been given against him. He does put himself about and I do think that sometimes he is his own worst enemy- sometimes. But the more I have watched him, the more I admire his effort and the fact that he can pull two defenders and give our other striker room to run in to. Henderson is a good player, and Julie, we're not Brazil.

  3. Julie.... you say he fouls every time the ball comes near him. Actually, a foul is given every time he breathes on an opposition player. If you actually watch carefully, you will see he doesn't actually commit many real fouls, it's just that the standard of refereeing is so dreadfully poor recently. Watch him carefully next game ..... see how often he is held down/pulled to the ground by a centre half who cannot win the ball against him fairly, because he is a strong player.
