Hughton to turn to youth

Mon, 21 Sep 17:08:54 2009

Caretaker Newcastle boss Chris Hughton will hand his youngsters a chance as the club looks to maintain its presence in the Carling Cup at Peterborough.

Hughton intends to rest key men for the third-round trip to London Road ahead of Saturday's Coca-Cola Championship visit to Ipswich and that could mean opportunities for the likes of Nile Ranger, Kazenga LuaLua, Tamas Kadar, Ryan Donaldson and Haris Vuckic.

Loan signing Zurab Khizanishvili is ineligible for the game having already played in the second round of the competition for Blackburn at Gillingham.

Full-back Danny Simpson is a doubt after jarring an ankle in Saturday's 3-1 win over Plymouth, while Shola Ameobi (foot) and Jonas Gutierrez (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.

  1. Play the kids. If we get beat, so what! We need this tournament, this season, like a hole in the head. II was hoping that we'd get a tougher draw than this so that we could bow out with our dignity in tact. If we get beat with a team full of younger players, then so what. As long as we don't get hammered.....
