Champions League - Celtic's away-day woes in full

Eurosport - Tue, 21 Oct 19:04:00 2008

Celtic face Manchester United this evening having failed to record a win in their last 18 Champions League away games.

2008-2009 Celtic Gary Caldwell - 0

The Bhoys have lost 17 times and drawn only once on their travels since 2001, and the bookmakers have them as 14/1 outsiders to end that winless run at Old Trafford.

Punters would do well to keep their money in their pockets, judging by the following tale of woe.

CELTIC'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AWAY FORM

1- Juventus 3-2 Celtic (September 18, 2001) - LOST

Manager Martin O'Neill is left fuming after a Nicola Amoruso dive wins a late Juve penalty and denies the Bhoys a heroic point.

2- Porto 3-0 Celtic (October 17, 2001) - LOST

Clayton gives Porto the lead within 60 seconds and the Portuguese side never look back as Celtic defender Bobo Balde has a nightmare.

3- Rosenborg 2-0 Celtic (October 23, 2001) - LOST

Despite winning all three home group games, a dreadful night in Norway ensures Celtic go out, as old boy Harald Brattbakk scores both goals.

4- Bayern Munich 2-1 Celtic (September 17, 2003) - LOST

Alan Thompson puts the visitors in front but Roy Makaay scores in the 73rd and 86th minutes to turn the match on its head.

5- Anderlecht 1-0 Celtic (October 21, 2003) - LOST

Disappointment in Brussels as Celtic fail to take advantage of Glen De Boeck's first-half red card as Aruna Dindane scores the only goal.

6- Lyon 3-2 Celtic (December 10, 2003) - LOST

Needing a draw to make the knockout stages, Celtic suffer heartbreak as Juninho converts a controversial late penalty for the French champions.

7- Milan 3-1 Celtic (September 29, 2004) - LOST

Stanislav Varga's second-half equaliser puts the Bhoys on course for a point - until Filippo Inzaghi and Andrea Pirlo strike late for Milan.

8- Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 Celtic (October 20, 2004) - LOST

O'Neill's side crumble after a goalless first half, as two goals from Matuzalem and one from Brandao condemn them to defeat.

9- Barcelona 1-1 Celtic (November 24, 2004) - DREW

A point! A precious point! John Hartson cancels out Samuel Eto'o's opener in the Camp Nou, but Celtic still finish bottom of their group.

10- Manchester Utd 3-2 Celtic (September 13, 2006) - LOST

A lively performance ends in defeat as Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Shunsuke Nakamura's goals prove in vain.

11- Benfica 3-0 Celtic (November 1, 2006) - LOST

Gary Caldwell's early own goal sets the tone on a miserable evening for Gordon Strachan and his men.

12- FC Copenhagen 3-1 Celtic (December 6, 2006) - LOST

Celtic perfect the 'three home wins, three away defeats' formula with a capitulation in the Danish capital.

13- Milan 1-0 Celtic (March 7, 2007) - LOST

Celtic keep Milan goalless in 90 minutes to send their last-16 tie to extra time, but Kaka wins it with a magnificent individual goal for the eventual champions.

14- Shakhtar 2-0 Celtic (September 18, 2007) - LOST

Brandao and Cristiano Lucarelli put the Ukrainian side two goals up inside eight minutes, and there is no way back for Gordon Strachan's men.

15- Benfica 1-0 Celtic (October 24, 2007) - LOST

Celtic look to be on course for a rare point on their travels before Oscar Cardozo nicks a winner for Benfica three minutes from time.

16- Milan 1-0 Celtic (December 4, 2007) - LOST

Filippo Inzaghi scores the only goal at the San Siro, yet both sides progress to the last 16 as Celtic's strong home form carries them through.

17- Barcelona 1-0 Celtic (March 4, 2008) - LOST

Having lost the first leg of their last 16 3-2 at home, Celtic need a miracle. But the wind is taken out of their sails when Xavi nets in the third minute.

18- Villarreal 1-0 Celtic (September 30, 2008) - LOST

Strachan's men prove a match for the Spaniards for three-quarters of the match, until Marcos Senna wins it with a brilliant free-kick.

  9. Manchester United have the quietest and s***est supporters in the world. People say United are the most spported team in the world with die-hard fans in Jamaica well I bet you could ask a supposed United fan in asia and he couldn't name at least 3 players not including Ronaldo or Rooney. Nither could they tell what happened in 1958. So I have made my point, United fans are so stuck up their own hole and most of them are gloryhunters. Remember Remember the 21st of November 2006. HAIL HAIL.
