Champions League - European Power Rankings

Eurosport - Tue, 21 Oct 19:15:00 2008

Liverpool remain top of the European Power Rankings ahead of their trip to Atletico Madrid, while Chelsea are closing in on the leaders.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Liverpool-Wigan Kuyt - 0

We take into account both domestic and Champions League performances, plus the relative difficulty of each team's league, to find out who is the best team in Europe.

Another late comeback in the Premier League saw Rafael Benitez's side pick up another unlikely win in the only round of domestic action since the international break.

Chelsea might have blotted their European copy book with a draw at Cluj, but remain immaculate at home and rise two places to fourth, behind Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Arsenal and Manchester United stay in mid-table, but the form book suggests they will win their respective matches against Fenerbahce and Celtic, neither of whom has cracked the top 20.

Jose Mourinho's Inter are sixth after an emphatic domestic win against Roma, who slip to 20th, while Juventus' continued poor form sees them slide three places to 14th.

1. (1) Liverpool - 27.50

2=. (2=) Real Madrid - 25.83

2=. (2=) Barcelona - 25.83

4. (6) Chelsea - 22.50

5. (4) Villarreal - 22.14

6=. (5) Atletico Madrid - 21.43

6=. (8) Internazionale - 21.43

8. (7) Anorthosis Famagusta - 20.40

9=. (9=) Arsenal - 20.00

9=. (9=) Manchester United - 20.00

11. (12) Porto - 17.40

12. (13) CFR Cluj - 16.91

13. (14) Bayern Munich - 16.75

14. (11) Juventus - 16.43

15. (16) Sporting Lisbon - 15.60

16. (17) Dynamo Kiev - 15.18

17. (15) Lyon - 15.00

18. (18=) Fiorentina - 14.29

19. (20) Shakhtar Donetsk - 12.95

20. (18=) Roma - 12.50

HOW IT WORKS

Scores are based on points per game in domestic league and Champions League games.

Domestic points per game is multiplied by the league coefficient - either 4, 4.5 or 5 - with teams in stronger leagues getting more credit.

League coefficients:

5 - England, Italy, Spain (12 teams)

4.5 - Germany, France, Portugal, Russia, Netherlands (10 teams)

4 - Belarus, Cyprus, Denmark, Romania, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine (10 teams)

Champions League victories are counted as three points for a win. They are all multiplied by a coefficient of 5.

Example: Liverpool

20 points from eight Premier League games = 2.50 points per game.

Multiplied by league coefficient of five - 2.5 x 5 = 12.5

Six points from two Champions League game = 3 points per game.

Multiplied by European coefficient of five - 15.00

Total score = 15.00 + 12.50 = 27.50

  5. They keep on asking themselves why they are not at the top, why they are not included, why they are in the middle of the table. And the most that make them sick is to see LFC always top. Come on LFC, help them before they are helpless.

  6. Im a liverpool fan & im well happy with the way we are playing at the moment. Only worry for me is Chelsea on sunday, we've conceded 4 goals in 2 games to lesser clubs, we need to tighten up against Chelsea or they will put 4 past us in 1 game. No Torres either, can we still beat them, YES! If we paly to our best, but away from home i'd be quite happy with a draw.
