Premier League - Shearer: I want to be a manager

Eurosport - Tue, 21 Oct 13:03:00 2008

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has hinted he may be willing to come to the Magpies' rescue after admitting a career in management interests him.

2007-2008 Newcastle United St James' Park Alan Shearer - 0

Monday night's 2-2 draw with Manchester City at St James' Park may have been creditable after the Magpies lost Habib Beye to a red card early on, but it did little to ease a crisis which has left them entrenched in the relegation zone.

Joe Kinnear has been put in charge of team affairs while owner Mike Ashley looks to find a buyer for the Tyneside club, but former boss Sir Bobby Robson suggested on Sunday that Shearer was the man with the "clout" to lead them out of their slump in the long term.

The former striker, United's all-time leading scorer, is on his way to gaining the qualifications which are a prerequisite for aspiring managers in the Premier League - although the likes of Gareth Southgate and Paul Ince were granted exemptions to take the reigns at Middlesbrough and Blackburn, respectively, without them.

And Shearer has revealed he is already planning a career in management.

"Everyone knows that I've done part of my coaching badges. I haven't done my UEFA Pro Licence which is mandatory but I am going to do it at some stage," he told BBC Radio Five Live.

"Management interests me.

"I can't turn round and say 'yes, I would be delighted to come here (to Newcastle)', because that would be wrong of me.

"But management interests me, at some stage of my career."

  1. My view on nufc is they have a lot of fans a big ground but at best are a 2nd rate team and have been for years thats why they never win things and only end up 2nd best look at portsmouth fa cup winners so size and big club egos mean nothing till you do the job when it counts! Maybe nufc should move a few miles north into the spl then they would be a top 3 club year after year. dave quinn portsmouth till i die!

  3. Still think Shearer should lower his ego a little and work in combo with Keegan. The place would come alive, a prospective dream partnership.

  4. Why would Shearer give up easy money and no worries working for the BBC than go into a job thats going to give him no end of sleepless nights.

  6. H if that came from a supporter of another team I might take that seriously. Liverpool are constantly living in the past.

  7. No matter who goes to Newcastle the supporters will expect too much. The sooner Newcastle fans realize that Newcastle United are nowhere near as big as the fans think they are the sooner the club will progress.

  8. Sheare may as well be appointed as manager of Newcastle, he was practically doing the job when he played there. I'm positive it was his influence that got Hullit the sack.

  13. Well done to the 10 man Magpies for holding the Nouveau Riche kids on the blocjk to a draw :-)

NEwcastle like my beloved WHUFC have suffered long enough from dodgy owners less hope both teams find some stability in the form of enduring owners in the years to come.

The build up of expectation of Shearer as manager is ridiculous the Magpies seem to have more faith in him that a Muslim in the Koran :-)

Its bound to lead to the same kind disappointment that Kevin Keegan experienced :-)

  14. Hey Billy, fair play for giving a well balanced opinion but the reason he annoys me is he knows how much the fans love him and he plays on it. totally agree that if he proves himself at a smaller club and comes up the leagues like Paul Ince did then he deserves a chance. Although I think we all know that isn't going to happen, he will either go straight to Newcastle or nowhere. He wouldn't be able to take managing a "small club" or one above his mighty stature. He may of been a great player but that doesn't mean I have to like the bloke.

  15. Sean what is your problem with him. 'Parasite', 'ego'. This is the man who is your top goal scorer, who consistantly performed right up until the final minute of his career. He is also (and yes i have met him) one of the most humble cut figures in premiership history, and a thoroughly likeable character. Ok he probably will not take the hot seat at NFC, but he never said publicly that he would, all he said was that management in general interested him. Great player, and I hope he goes about it through the right route i.e. the Tony Adams/ Paul Ince way. Either assisting first, or starting somewhere lower down the leagues. And I predict he makes a great manager if given time to gain experience.

  16. People on here are a lot of old moaning fools. Shearer has been saying this for a long time. The media makes a story to keep you lot happy....fools.

  17. Anyone doubting Shearer's ability as manager it just seems strange to me that Newcastle were doing great under Roeader when Shearer was there with him, and then when Shearer left Roeder struggled to cope and the team went down-hill. Shearer may not be the greatest manager in the world but he would get the backing of the fans and something most wouldn't....time to turn thigns around.

  20. He is a parasite living off of his history of supporting and playing for Newcastle. He keeps coming out saying he wants the job but doesn't have the balls to take it. Don't expect to see him as manager anytime soon. When his ego can't take not being noticed anymore and he does take the job I expect him to be a massive disappointment and this is from a Newcastle fan
