Henin comeback will start in Brisbane

Eurosport - Wed, 21 Oct 07:06:00 2009

Belgium's former world number one and seven-times Grand Slam winner Justine Henin will make her comeback from retirement at the Brisbane International in January 2010.

"After a 15-month absence I am pleased to begin my second tennis career at the Brisbane International," Henin said in a statement.

"It will be great to get back to playing competitive tennis again and with the strong field, the same court surface and a similar climate to Melbourne, it will be the perfect preparation leading into the Australian Open," she added.

Brisbane will see Henin, 27, square up against compatriot and fellow ex-retiree Kim Clijsters, who won September's US Open just five weeks after returning from a two-year retirement.

"It will be tremendous to see Justine match up against her former rival and countrywoman Kim Clijsters," said tournament director Steve Ayles.

"With the former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic and Australian Open quarter-finalist Jelena Dokic confirmed, we are looking at an extremely strong women's field," he added.

Henin won a total of 41 WTA Tour titles and held the world No.1 spot for 117 non-consecutive weeks, the ranking she had when she retired on May 14, 2008, citing a succession of injuries and a desire to live a life away from tennis.

Ayles said she would be given one of four wildcard entries into the tournament because she had no current WTA ranking.

Henin will play two exhibition events in Charleroi and Dubai later this year to gain match fitness before her tournament return, he added.

  1. I wonder why whenever someone is mentioned to participate in a WTA or Grand slam event . everyone starts hoping that this one will beat the williams . i understand the fact that they aren`t very sexy . but they are athletes not pageant queens . So i just don`t get the fact that every body is eager for the williams loss . it`s just tennis guys . just watch matches and enjoy the fight. Give praise who ever play the best . but these u`re silly posts started to make me sick .

  4. The fact that every comeback targets but the Williams sisters simply means this:
    --they are the best
    --most feared
    --most loved
    --most hated

Without them, tennis wouldn't be talked about the way it's done now.So thank these splendid girls. They changed the way some people looked at the world.Give everyone a chance and don't protect white people through cheating and unjust line calls and none of those girls will ever match their records.
Believe it or not, that is the truth of the matter.

Henin is a marvelous player, but she is playing the Williams sisters in a world of prejudice and favoritism.None of those other girls would match half a record of the sisters had they been in the situation of hate, even on the pitch, that the sisters are forced to endure.

  5. vic m, actually, henin is 6-7 head to head against serena. she's 4-2 against serana in grand slams, and she beat serena in 3 CONSECUTIVE grand slams! when she retired last year, everyone was beating her (includin schiavonne!)
so now that she's rested and recharged, and if she's injury free, then YEAH she'l start beating the williams again.

  6. i'm a huge henin fan and am so glad that she's back! now if henin lives up to expectation and plays tennis like she did in 2006-2007, then we will be sure that 2010 will have henin's name again as grand slam champ. all she needs is to win wimbledon and that's it, she can just retire for good.

  7. wow! what is it with all the hate for the william sisters? Yes i agree that Justine Henin is a great champion and the game is going to be much better with her back! But no one is right in saying that she is better than the williams sisters. If you pay close attentiion to their respective careers you will not that the william sisters came into prominence at the turn of the century completely dominating the sport with the prescence of hingis, seles, capriati, henin, clijsters, davenport to mention a few. For three years they dominated the sport (2000-2003) altering the womens game. For good or worse the game became alot more power orientated. People had to adapt their game just to keep up with them. Then came their demise and end of their dominance when their sister was shot down and it is then you will note that justine came into her own, and began to claim gran slams. Before this the only grand slam she had won was the french open which included a highly controverial match with serena williams. For me they are all great champions and are all the greatest champions of there era. But i think and i know alot of people would agree with me that the story of the william sisters is one of the greatest stories in any sport they made history in many ways, which is why probably historically they shall be ememberd more. ON a personal note i favour venus williams who i believe when on form is on a different level to serena or justine, and has the poise and elegance of a champion and also has done more for the womens game behind the scenes than either! I see serena as arrogant at times, and never been a big fan of justine for a couple of reasons which i wont dwelve upon. As far as i see it Serena: greatest hard court champion of her era; Justine:greatest claycourt champion of her era and venus the greatest champion of her era.

  8. No matter hwo invalid a comment might be by Eurosport standard and attitude, the truth is that Henin and Clijster have emerged when there is no longer women tennis players other than the Williamses at GS level.. This fact can be seen by their dominance from their hay days when Henin was a small girl who can't handle Venus at wimbledon circuit or Serena. With passing of age she can now challenge them just like Clijster did in the last GS. What a great archivement for her to face the best in semis she did not win

FANTASTIC COMMENT RICH!!!!! Serena and Venus r jokes, especially serena, everyone who knows anything about tennis knows that there were no other good players around who were in their prime when serena won her career grand slam and most of her titles, and if the woman herself billie jean king says something bout tennis, u better bloody well listen, all the players in the world will agree that henin is the best tennis player of her generation by absolutely miles, the only person that wud disagree is serena, because shes a cocky fat cow and every1 hates her, shes an embarassment to the sport, when shes put under pressure she falls on her 100% pure fat @55, all she can do is stand there and slap the ball, and as for venus i like her but lets be hones all she cna do is slap the ball and come to the net and spread eagle her arms and hope that noone can pass her, but now that kim n justine r bak they will be having none of it from these 2 and they will teach them a lesson

As I've suggested in (free on-the-web) verse, females should play TABLE tennis, which puts far less stress on the racket/bat arm.

  11. So, Vic M. The Williams sisters fear no-one? That'll be why, then, Henin sent Serena packing at the QF stage of every GS event she contested in 2007 and also dispatched Venus the same year in the US Open semis.

Head-to-heads do count for something. However, Venus never beat Justine when Justine was the higher-ranked player. All her victories came around 2001-02, when Justine was not a Grand Slam champion or world number 1. In fact, they only faced eachother once after Justine won her first Slam at the 2003 French Open - at the '07 US Open (Henin winning in straight sets).

As for comments 6 & 7 - we again have a new Williams devotee (although I'm not sure you need to bring your race/nationality into the equation). With 7 GS titles in 5 years, I really don't think Henin needs to prove herself. She has a much better GS record than the Williams sisters (who have both been competing much longer) and her inability to win Wimbledon, so far, is not the mark that professional tennis players are benchmarked against. Great that Venus has won Wimbledon 5 times... but what else has she won? Aus Open...? Nope. French Open....? Nope.

Look at the comments from the all-time tennis greats. I seem to recall Billie-Jean King remarking of Henin that: "pound for pound, she was the greatest tennis player of her generation".

I think I'll have greateer regard for her comments as opposed to yours... but thanks.

If you want to continue blindly defending every

Yes, by all means be happy for the return of YOUR tennis saviour, no problem with that but please dont start talking all jumped up & puff chested about EITHER Venus OR Serena. Are The Williams Sisters the ONLY players you thought of when you posted that ????? I wonder WHY

  15. So whoever would suggest that the Hennin`s comeback will be a real threat for Williams , i Say this is not the case . Serena already has 111 grandslams Venus 7 . they`re at the end of their carrier exactly like hennis new short one .
so the pressure will be on justine .she`s the one need to prove her-self not Serena nor Venus.
by the way i`m not american or african to support the williams i`m EMIRATI. And Dubai 2010 will again go for one of the Williams.

  16. Hennin should be afraid if Serena . because if she would cheat again like what she did in roland garros 2003 . she`ll shove the #@$% ball into her F@#$% throat "and this time "Serena will be serious " .

  17. It's not bad news for the Williams! Check the head to head and u will know that Henin has a losing record! Venus has won 7 of 9 meetings! Serena has won 6 of 4! Besides Henin has never won Wimbledon and we all know Serena has won on all four surfaces! Serena & Venus fear no one!

From Vic M, on Wed 21 Oct 12:19PM
  18. i think she might be disappointed with her come back especially if she doesnt live up to kims explosive comeback the pressure is going to be immense for her to do well straight out of the blocks which i believe will be her undoing, we shall see.
