League One - Tax issue led to Barnes bankrupcy

Eurosport - Wed, 21 Oct 09:02:00 2009

Liverpool and England legend John Barnes said a misunderstanding over taxes led to him being declared bankrupt days after he was sacked by Tranmere Rovers.

The former winger left his post as Jamaica coach in the summer to take over at Prenton Park, but lost eight of his 11 games in charge.

He was declared insolvent by a Liverpool court last week and will be discharged on October 14, 2010.

"The bankruptcy issue is a tax oversight which is being dealt with," he said.

Barnes is reported to have been in touch with the Inland Revenue since the court appearance in order to reach agreement over the payment of taxes owed.

Barnes won 79 caps for England and played at two World Cups as well as the 1988 European Championships. He scored a wonder goal in a 1984 friendly against Brazil in Rio de Janeiro's Maracana.

One of the first black players to play for the Three Lions, Barnes helped fight racism within the game.

He was subjected to racist abuse both at and away from stadiums, while he is still active in anti-racism campaigns to this day.

A distinguished servant of Watford, Liverpool and Newcastle, Barnes's managerial career suffered a stuttering start at Celtic in 1999 and 2000 then he worked in the media until birthplace Jamaica came calling in 2008.

At the court he gave his occupation as 'provider of media services, lately a footballer'.
