Tired Radwanska dumped out

Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska was dumped out of the Kremlin Cup in the first round by Russia's Maria Kirilenko, effectively ending her hopes of qualifying for the season-ending tournament in Doha.

"It was a tough match today, I was feeling a bit tired and exhausted," said the Pole (pictured), who was battling with Russia's Vera Zvonareva and Serbia's Jelena Jankovic for the last remaining spot in the $4.55 million (£3m) extravaganza.

"I was trying because I was still in with a chance for Doha, but the surface is so slow here, you need to run a lot to win the point. Maybe if it was a faster surface, like grass, it would have been better for me but it wasn't my day today."

Kirilenko, who had lost in the first round in all her four previous appearances in Moscow, was delighted with her victory.

"To beat a seeded player in your first match is a great way to start a tournament. I've played her three times now and I won twice so I knew what to expect from her," said the Russian world number 61, who also beat Radwanska in the second round of the US Open last month.

"I actually like to play her because she is not very aggressive and I always have enough time to hit winners."

Italy's fourth seed Flavia Pennetta followed Radwanska out of the Russian capital when she retired with a knee injury midway through the second set of her first-round match against Hungary's Agnes Szavay.

Russia's sixth seed Elena Vesnina was upset, going down to 127th-ranked compatriot Evgeniya Rodina 6-1 3-6 6-2, while fifth seed Nadia Petrova, also Russian, crashed 7-6 6-3 to Ukrainian Alyona Bondarenko.

  1. Radwanska couldn't stand good shots. She is regular, but boring to watch her. Injury is a good explanation, but is caused, because she played too much. That's all, it's a job like others.

  2. Tired or not, Kirilenko has her number anyway, Agnieszka is too weak for someone who goes for her shots x

  3. Radwanska is good player but has way over-played these weeks shes so injured she should just go and rest because this will only come back to haunt her later in her career.

Hope Maria can have a good week, shes a decent player but ridiculously pretty.

As I've suggested in (free on-the-web) verse, females should play TABLE tennis, which puts far less stress on the racket/bat arm.

  6. not only is she knackered, there is this pathos about her that was so evident in beijing, I hope she is not sickening for a virus of sorts. Why play so many tournaments anyway? caroline broke down when about to win a game 6-0 in her thirtieth tournament of the year in luxembourg, flavia also broke down, so it looks like this greed is costing the players physically. Why is there professional body silent about this self abuse?
