Gers suffer Unirea thrashing

Rangers suffered a night of humiliation as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat to Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League clash at Ibrox - just weeks after enduring a similar reverse at the hands of Sevilla.

The drama unfolded amid a catalogue of errors, with the Scottish champions enjoying the best possible start when a Pedro Mendes shot was deflected into the back of his own net by Ricardo Vilana with less than two minutes gone.

The visitors then levelled through Marius Ioan Bilasco before Steven Davis squandered the opportunity to reclaim the lead when his penalty was saved shortly before the break, but there was worse to come for Walter Smith's men in the second half with own-goals from Kyle Lafferty and Lee McCulloch handing Unirea the advantage, before Pablo Brandan completed the rout.

Although Ibrox was short of capacity, the atmosphere was cranked up after Mendes collected a Jerome Rothen corner at the edge of the box and drove towards goal, happy to see the ball take a significant deflection off Vilana before looping over Tudor.

There was the occasional flurry in the visiting box but in the 32nd minute Unirea deservedly drew level with a fine goal by striker Bilasco. Midfielder Iulian Apostol split the Ibrox defence to send Brandan into the box and his cut-back from the left was easily slid in to the empty net by Bilasco.

Five minutes later Rangers had the chance to retain their lead when Fernandes was adjudged by referee Eric Braamhaar to have handled a David Weir header, following a looping Rothen free-kick into a packed penalty area.

Davis struck the penalty to Tudor's right and watched in dismay as the goalkeeper dived to push the ball behind for a corner.

Lafferty replaced Mendes at the break but the Irishman's first real involvement was five minutes later when he helped the visitors take the lead.

When Apostol's low cross was delivered into the box, Fernandes flicked the ball on and it took the slightest of touches off the luckless Northern Ireland international before it sped past McGregor and in off the post.

The boos rang out around Ibrox in the 59th minute when McCulloch headed a Brandan free-kick past McGregor to make it 3-1, and many Rangers supporters simply upped and left in disgust when Brandan fired in a 30-yard drive after taking a short free-kick from Apostol.

  3. #16 Stuart - Think I'm going to agree with you for the first time ever here! ;)
There is no point me repeating everything you just said so I'll just say I SECOND THAT!
State of the Old Firm is an all time low. Kaunas was bad luck and reaaally bad performance, Urinea was a total shambolic display of attempted football. What will it be in 2-3 years time? If I was a betting man I would put my money on Dun Utd, Hibs, M'well or Aberdeen to split or even win the SPL in 5 years time. Not because their standards are rising, because the OF are dropping rapidly... and 90% all goes down to the development of our youth system. The Scotland national team will tell you that.

  4. Ok, guys - how many of you are on here shouting about last night's game, and the dire state of Scottish football, when you have kids propped in front of the telly with theit Sony Playstations, x-box's, etc, instead of "jaikets doon furr goalposts"..?? We can point the finger elsewhere (SFA, SPL, etc) all we like, but I think it's time we looked a bit closer to home to see who also has a responsibility in the decline of Scottish football. So, instead of treating your little darlings to games consoles this xmas, tanner ba's and footie strips are the order of the day!!

  7. This is no laughing matter, I am a celtic fan and I dont find this funny. This to me is comfirmation that scottish football is dying. Celtic have also looked very poor this season, so we cant laugh! This concerns all old firm fans! The drop in the standard of football being produced in the SPL on weekly basis is embarassing, not just the old firm but the SPL as a whole. There is no money no great competition and the players(or so called players) dont demonstrate any technical ability and struggle to do the simple things like making passes! The whole of scottish football needs a wake up call. The structure thats in place to produce players at schoolboy level needs to be overhauled and the criteria in which we pick these players should also be changed! Its not about physical stature and stregnth, its a game of skill, guile, and technical ability. This is how we need to teach the youngsters how to play the game. its the only way we can change our game at club and international level! It will take time but we should have done it 20 years ago!
