Southgate leaves Boro

Wed, 21 Oct 13:32:07 2009

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate was relieved of his duties within hours of guiding his side to victory over Derby.

The 39-year-old former England defender's departure was confirmed in a brief statement issued through the club's official website, www.mfc.co.uk.

The statement read: "Middlesbrough FC have announced that manager Gareth Southgate has been relieved of his position with immediate effect."

It continued: "Football consultant Alan Smith will also be leaving the club as part of the change."

Chairman Steve Gibson admitted the decision to dispense with Southgate's services had been the toughest of his reign to date.

He said: "This has been the most difficult decision I have had to make in all the time I have been in football.

"Gareth has given Middlesbrough Football Club magnificent service as a skipper and, in very difficult circumstances, as manager.

"I appointed Gareth in a situation that was greatly unfavourable to him.

"He is a good man and has all the qualities and integrity that we wanted in a manager.

"However, the time is right for change and that change has had to be made."

  3. This is a poor decision by Middlesborough chairman Steve Gibson, yet again a chairman gets scared when a few mindless fools spew their pearls of wisdom from the stands. He was your best bet to get you up. your 4th in the table and one point off the top. Gibson states " Gareth has given Middlesbrough Football Club magnificent service as a skipper and, in very difficult circumstances, as manager." If this is how you reward a man who has bust a gut for you thank f*** I dont work for you. the time to change him would have been if he didn't get you up at the end of rhe season, Gibson can take responsibility now for the turmoil that will hit the club. Roy Keane might be available soon. oops look where his team are?

  5. I think Gibson's decision is about right. The new chap can come in and assess the squad properly and then plan for the transfer window for some personnel tweaking. Good contenders dont spring so immediately to mind. Steve Gibsons last three appointments all had no previous managerial experience Robson/McLaren/Southgate and I'm not sure that there is a really outstanding contender to follow suit this time (Gus Poyet or Jimi Floyd Hasselbaink maybe I suppose). Lee Clark may be possible from Huddersfield as may Nigel Pearson at Leicester (but both may only go with a fight and Boro may get rejected).
For me David O'Leary and Glenn Hoddle still have plenty to prove and ought to be considered. Paul Jewell, Steve Coppell, Alan Curbishley and Stuart Pearce may also come into the reckoning. The Boro job is one of the best on offer as it comes with a Chairman who will definitely give you fair crack of the whip.

Not good enough though.... Ferguson wasn't a great manager overnight...

Shame, I like Southgate... He'll be back!! (somewhere)

  7. Well said David S.I thought he would be given until xmas, and we are not exactly in a bad position at the moment. The financial situation is going to be the same whoever comes in,so if anyone is expecting a massive improvement I'd say dont hold your breath. In the Premiership there is a distinct correlation between wages paid and league position.Boro do not have the financial muscle to operate,in its higher regions.
However, thanks must be given to Gareth, for taking on a difficult challenge, and as David said,he did some good for the club.I hope the next manager has some experience behind him,I think we have had two inexperienced managers in Robson and Southgate and paid the price.Personally I'd gladly have McLaren back, but he wouldnt come.Nigel Pearson would be an interesting thought !!

  8. Well it had to happen but......

Gareth Southgate will become I believe a great manager, he clearly had the players with him. The only problem was he had lost the fans hence the small crowds. However I believe we should have got rid of Alan Smith and brought in someone with Smith's experiance but more charasmatic someone the fans could have related too. I also feel he needed a more experienced number 2.

He should hold his head up high he did a good job overall at Boro within the confines of our best players having to go to service the debt and having no money to spend. He brought some good players to the club ie Tuncay, Huth, O'Neil and Digard to name a few and yes he wasted money on Alves but that happens.

When he comes back to the club he should be cheered and not booed he did alot for this club as a player and manager in difficult times..

    UP THE BORO
