CARDIFF (AFP) - South Africa captain John Smit and star wing Bryan Habana are among nine members of the Springboks' victorious World Cup final starting XV named to face Wales in Saturday's one-off rugby union international here at the Millennium Stadium.
Although several players are missing from the two-match tour - South Africa play the Barbarians in a non-cap international at Twickenham a week on Saturday - their side still contains plenty of experienced campaigners.
As well as Smit and Habana, the World Player of the Year, fellow World Cup final starters JP Pietersen, Jaque Fourie, and Francois Steyn are in the backs while up front talented back-rows Schalk Burger and Juan Smith together with lock Bakkies Botha and prop CJ van der Linde help form a powerful pack.
This match, where the inaugural Prince William Cup is the prize on offer, will be South Africa's first since they beat England 15-6 to win the Webb Ellis Trophy in Paris on October 20.
In all the team shows six changes and a positional switch from the one that triumphed at the Stade de France. Among those missing against Wales will be goalkicking full-back Percy Montgomery, impressive half-back duo Butch James and Fourie du Preez, No 8 Danie Rossouw and lock Victor Matfield.
Ruan Pieenar takes the injured Montgomery's place with Andre Pretorius and Ricky Januarie providing the new half-back pairing.
Saturday's fixture will be South Africa coach Jake White's final full international charge before he steps down next month after four years in charge where he has come under political pressure to include players of colour as part of the country's post-apartheid policy of "transformation".
During his four-year tenure he also faced criticism from the country's Afrikaner rugby heartland over his team selection and was deeply hurt by the decision of officials at the South African Rugby Union (SARU) to advertise his jon while the World Cup was still in progress.
"You never know (as a player) when it's your last one, some of the players get injured but at I least I know this is my last swansong," White told reporters at the squad's hotel here Wednesday.
"I'm not unhappy about it. I'm very content with where we are as a group. The brief was when I took over we wanted to be number one in the world, we wanted to be world champions and I've been lucky enough and privileged enough to be part of that.
"It's great for me that my last Test is in a massive stadium like the Millennium Stadium and is in a rugby country like Wales."
Sharks No 8 Ryan Kankowski, in line to make his debut on Saturday, is the only player from outside the World Cup squad in the starting XV.
"He had a very successful Super 14 campaigh, he was part of the Sharks team that played in the final. He's been a Sevens Springbok and he will combine nicely with the pack of forwards we've picked this weekend," White said.
In the front-row CJ van der Linde moves to loosehead prop following the retirement of legendary prop Os du Randt while Johann Muller takes Matfield's lock spot.
Front-row forward Heinke van der Merwe, on the bench, is included in the Springboks' matchday 22 for the first time.
White, who said recently he wanted to take time to consider his future although he has been linked with a number of jobs, including a position with England, explained he was glad to be finishing with a strong-looking side.
"I've been spoilt. We had 659 Test caps in the World Cup final.
"But, as I said to John (Smit), look at the Test caps here. John is playing his 75th, Bakkies Botha his 45th, Bryan Habana his 36th, Jaque Fourie his 38th."
Wales caretaker coach Nigel Davies, who hands over to Warren Gatland next week, named his side on Tuesday for what will be the hosts' first Test since a 38-34 defeat at the hands of Fiji saw them fail to reach the World Cup quarter-finals - a loss which led to the exit of former coach Gareth Jenkins.
Ospreys centre Gavin Henson is now set to make his first Wales start for more than a year while Llanelli full-back Morgan Stoddart is the only debutant in the starting line-up.
