Int Football - Your view: Readers split on friendlies

Eurosport - Fri, 21 Nov 12:50:00 2008

Eurosport-Yahoo! readers are split down the middle on whether England should play friendly internationals.

FOOTBALL Germany England Terry Upson - 0

With nine England first-team regulars ruled out of the Germany game through injury, we asked you in our latest poll whether there was any point playing friendlies during the club season.

At the start of the week, with players dropping like flies and the match threatening to descend into an embarrassing farce, the No camp surged into a commanding lead with nearly two-thirds of the vote.

After all, what was the point of playing a virtual 'B' team in Berlin with most of the first team putting their feet up at home?

On Wednesday night, we found out, as Fabio Capello's side delivered a performance of pride, confidence and enthusiasm to claim a morale boosting win and end the Italian's first year in the job on a high note.

In the aftermath of the game, something strange happened - our readers began to see the merit of friendlies, and the Yes column started to catch up.

Some time in the early hours of Friday, the number of Yes votes drew level with the No tally.

The moral of the story - international friendlies are great as long as you win them.

Should England play friendlies during the club season?

Yes - 50%

No - 50%
