Premier League - Walcott undergoes shoulder surgery

Arsenal and England star Theo Walcott has undergone surgery on his dislocated right shoulder and will not return until at least February.

Walcott suffered the injury on England duty ahead of the friendly win against Germany and is expected to be out for at least three months.

The 19-year-old has struggled with injuries in both shoulders since joining in Arsenal in 2006. He missed several months after having his left shoulder pinned in 2007, and damaged it again in a recent Premier League game against Stoke.

Arsenal are increasingly worried about the winger's hereditary weakness, and manager Arsene Wenger is concerned that he has become a target for strong challenges from opponents.

Wenger has questioned the timing of the clash in Berlin but refused to blame the FA for the training-ground accident, and is yet to decide whether the club will pursue compensation.

"I'm disappointed because he is an important part of the squad, but that could have happened in training here," Wenger said.

"It was an accident that could have happened anywhere.

"I do not blame the FA for that. It was accidental in training and I accept that.

"In a moment like that you do not think about compensation you think about how you can replace the player."

The FA confirmed that they would be prepared to pay compensation as they insure all national team players to the tune of £100,000 per week in lost wages.

Walcott was taken to hospital in agony after suffering the dislocation in a freak accident as he fell in the rain at the Olympic Stadium.

Although Walcott's shoulder was quickly put back into place, the player was in discomfort when he returned to England's team hotel, where an assessment was made over his return to London.

"We are all very disappointed but the important thing is for Theo to travel home and make a quick recovery," England manager Fabio Capello said on Tuesday.

  6. ha ha ha ... i LOVE a bit of banter, and like even more having been the catalyst ! The true fact is that, though i love football, i am sickened by the lying, cheating , fake antics of footballers falling in agony without nary a contact! Compare this to rugby players who are real men,, accept refereeing decisions normally without question, and would no more feign injury, or succumb to one if humanly possible, than i would reject a dunkin donut with a cup of tea! In ccomparison, football players are overpaid, immature crybaby primadonas... there simp;y is NO ARGUMENT

  11. you are wrong. The examples in rugby are in the hundreds. Broken shoulder (The New Zealander Matai in this year's rugby league world cup was playing with bits of his shoulder broken and pinned into his shoulder muscle). Wilkinson played with a badly twisted ankle when he scored the drop-goal tht won the world cup. that ankle required a 2 months break but he dismissed it. The old captain of the All Blacks played with with an inflamed neck despite he was a @#$%. Another cut his finger so he does not miss the world cup with an injury in it. An Australian forward stapled the skin of a front injury and ten taped it to continue playing the game. The examples are in the hundreds... So leave rugby alone! :-)

  13. Agger has played with a dislocated finger? And what about the keeper that played years ago with a broken neck, never seen that from a rugby player.

  14. It may have passed you by Nothingman (top name) that rugby players use their hands to pass the ball and make tackles. As for being a bloody moron, maybe true, but the odds are lessened by not being a soccer fan.

  17. Let's hope his recovery takes a long long time.

  18. Nice one Gazfox! Do you recall that incident last season when James Hook playing for Wales against Australia (I think) dislocated a finger during a tackle, ran off to have it popped back in place, then ran back on again to make another tackle in the same move? Most soccer players, possibly all would still be writhing around in "agony".

From Feltorange, on Thu 20 Nov 6:14PM
  19. Arsenal won't be paying a fortune out in wages for poor Theo, he is "only" on £20000 per week! Probably the reason why the poor sap dislocated his shoulder, he had to stir his own tea as he can't afford to pay a butler.

From Feltorange, on Thu 20 Nov 6:10PM
  20. Walcott is a good player but always seems to get injured a lot im sure Arsenal can manage withthout him (shame)who realy cares.
