Thorpe blog: 7-0, unless things change

Eurosport - Fri, 21 Nov 14:31:00 2008

In the latest edition of his Eurosport-Yahoo! blog, former England batsman Graham Thorpe warns the tourists they could be hammered 7-0 unless they sort out their batting at the top of the order.

CRICKET England Graham Thorpe - 0

England are on the back foot and it's hard to see them coming back from 3-0 down. They need a miracle, because they have a big mountain to climb.

It's not difficult to see where the problems lie: they are just not getting enough runs on the board. Today they were 40 runs short, no doubt about it, and it was again that dead period in the middle of the innings that was the main problem.

England have been fine with the ball, but if they are not getting the runs on the board then they will never be competitive.

In the sub-continent, if a batting side doesn't get every part of their performance correct then you will lose - and England have not yet figured out that on the sub-continent you need to be aggressive at the top of the order in the powerplays.

The openers have got to get the run-rate up early, make a quick start, which will then allow our long middle order to score at four or five runs-per-over through the middle period against the spinners.

Ian Bell's role as a frontline batsman on the sub-continent is under a huge question mark for me. He just doesn't play at the right pace, with the right tone; he has not figured out that the openers have to be aggressive at the top of the order.

Maybe it's time for Luke Wright to be given a chance as opener in the fourth game, of perhaps even move Andrew Flintoff up the order. Freddie is being wasted as a batsman at the moment; coming in against the spinners in the middle of the innings is a nightmare scenario for him.

If they don't get their game together, they will get a good hammering - maybe even 7-0. At the moment they are downbeat and disappointed, but there is a glimmer of hope. If they can win the next game, that will get their confidence up and give them the belief to lift their game.

England still have the players; it is still the best one-day side in two decades. But they have got to realise that beating South Africa in England is one thing; challenging India on the sub-continent requires a different game altogether.

On Sunday, England need to get it right at the top of the order, get the impetus going through the middle overs and be more committed against spin. If they can do that, there is a glimmer of hope.

Follow live over-by-over coverage from Sunday at 4am as England look to get back on track.

  1. Only Darren Pattinson can save him. Spare no expense to fly him out now. First class if the ECB can run to it . His record in international cricket is exemplorary. why , oh why has he been cast asunder after one performance.

  2. England has once again succumbed to the Indians, and perhaps the Lighting/Fog may have had a part to play in the last game, and also the D/L method as well. England is still not playing with the will and desire to win, they lack that hunger! Looking at the side right now, there's only one player that constantly exudes a burning desire to want to win, and that's Freddie. However, cricket is such that you need more than one man to have the itch. KP has thus far been unimpressive as a captain, in as much I agree that he has tremendous batting potential, clearly he's not a leader. I think the ECB needs to review its decision after the Fredalo incident and look have Freddie Flintoff captain the one day side. As for the remainder of the team, Patel serves no purpose and should be replaced, Collingwood is terribly out of form and clearly wicket keeper Pryor, surely there's gotta be a better wicket keeper batsman!

  3. the ball harldy swings so open with flintoff and bopara, broad at no 3 to get the runrate up, pieteson at no 4 , collingwood bell and shah at no 5, 6, 7 as i feel they are better players of spin , seeing bell bat against chawla last year.prior and patel at 8 and 9, swann at 10 and time to get variety sidebottom at 11. remember dhonis side is new , if u put the pressure back on them there are few questions to be asked, being a indian i like to see a competitive cricket i dont want to waste my time watching it.
with this team u have the variety of bowling 30 overs spin, there is no point stcking to the same batting order, it could be good in england but not in sub continent, and one other thing is the english batsmen in the middle orders against spin they tend to block it or hit it hard, there isnt manouvering skills bcoz they ont pick the ball from the hand they tend to read it from the pitch, which give them less time to frame where to play

  5. Personally, I think England is still a long way to go and challenge India under Dhoni. Just do not forget that this is a totally rejuvenated young and eager team to perform with positive results. There may be some type of intimidation as well as agreession by bowlers of classic batsmen like Gambir and Yuvraj but having them banned will not deter others to step into their shoes and perform even better. So play a gentleman's game and respect the laid cricket laws of the day.

  12. Excuse me TPMAC are you referring to todays match because in that particula one we batted FIRST!
KP , however, admitted to raising the light issue at training yesterday so why the hell didn't he get something done about it instead of remonstrating like a spoilt schoolkid.
Personally, I thought India were well in control of the situation, Dhoni knew exactly what the situation was and slowed the game to his tempo, and that is probably what really p....d KP off?

  15. Unfortunately for England, at the present time they have now come up against the best team in the world. As a Hampshire man, it disappoints me to say that Kevin Pietersen should not be the captain. He is not a motivator, or has the man management skills. With the obvious threat of the Duckworth Lewis rule being implemented today, how naive to bat second!

From TPMAC, on Thu 20 Nov 9:45PM
  16. Simple really. I've always thought it: bat first whatever the conditions; be able to bowl so tightly, that the run rate just keeps on going up and up afterwards. I reckon you should be able to defend 235 most of the time, even in 2008! In 1978, when I was a wee wipper snapper colt at Genrothes Cricket Club, I used to get told to hold the ball this way and do this that way. SH!£e! Even in those great days, I used to reverse swing it ver' near sideways; okay, certainly a good 45 degrees. Batters couldn't hit the bloody thing. Of course, didn't know it would be called what it is today. This slogging for 90 off the first 12 overs is really so baffling; how can first class bowlers keep getting it done to them? Bowlers have got total advantage, but recent decades and a bit prove they just don't think: you hardly ever see a slower delivery. Mr Underwood used to have loadsa variation in speed. It was great to watch on the T.V. Remember that slower one Steve H. hit the Clarkeman in 2005; has he done it since? I just don't think we might have first class bowlers after all. Mr Thorpe was saying you had to be more positive at the start of an innings, you know, 90 off 12 stuff. Nah, bowlers just dinnae realise how much of an impact they should make. Boycott and Botham to the rescue, I say!

  17. England need to positive and commited with a collective effort + must have the will to win. If the batsmen do not pile up 100 in the first 10-15 overs, you can be sure the game has been lost. The bowlers must rattle the first 5 batsmen in the 20-25 overs to cement the potential win.

The Indians are no more clever than the other national cricket teams - a few years back they too were at the receiving end like the England team is at present.

  18. Rob above hasit spot on! Far too much media hype about Fredalo/our yaapie captain/Poor boy Harmison.. there are far better players in other cricket playing countries who just play cricket not pose as ego tripped celebs!

From GEOFF S, on Thu 20 Nov 8:41PM
  19. Perhaps it is about time that the selectors started to understand that One Day Cricket is a completely different game to Test Match Cricket. You need a different mind set and a different attitute. Lets start picking an appropriate team for the task in hand. There are probably only 4 players who would fit into my choice for both types of the game. We need a pool of 20 players to pick from for each form of the game not a pool of 20 for both forms.

From paul, on Thu 20 Nov 8:11PM
  20. Their egos are now bigger than the game of cricket. If they carry on under-performing in the ODIs, the tests will be lost, we'll then struggle against the Windies and before we know it will be an Ashes summer. Unless they turn a corner NOW, the Ashes will be lost next summer. I've invested in my Ashes tickets and hope the England team realise that there are lots of people who want to see them succeed, but who are feeling very let down by them at present. COME ON ENGLAND! SORT YOUR HEADS OUT AND START PLAYING!!!
