Sven gets a Grip on City targets

Fri 21 Dec, 07:30 AM

Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed assistant Tord Grip has been clocking up the air miles in an attempt to find another gem for Manchester City. After signing eight new players within weeks of his arrival at Eastlands, Eriksson has already announced his first capture of the January transfer window with the arrival of Mexico striker Nery Castillo on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk.

But with City currently occupying fourth spot in the Premier League and hopeful of at least finishing in a top-six berth despite Tuesday's disappointing Carling Cup defeat to Tottenham, Eriksson's winter recruitment campaign is not over.

And, while Eriksson tends to remain at City to work with his players on the training ground, it is Grip supplying the dossiers on potential transfer targets.

"We are still working hard and hopefully something else will happen," said Eriksson.

"Our scouts and Tord Grip have been travelling a lot.

"In fact, Tord is away so often, when he does eventually come in, we call him a foreigner.

"The main thing is that this time, it is much easier to know what we need."

In addition to Castillo, who is not likely to make his debut until the FA Cup third-round tie with West Ham on January 5, City have also had Saudi Arabia skipper Yasser Al Qahtani training with them this week.

Al Qahtani could only stay with City for a day but Eriksson was impressed and has vowed to keep tabs on the forward and possibly invite him back for an extended session in the future.

In the meantime, Eriksson will hope to steer the Blues to a first away win since August against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Young midfielder Michael Johnson is set to miss out after experiencing some discomfort from an abdominal injury that required surgery last month.
