Rovers' cup tie gets go-ahead

Tue 22 Jan, 12:00 PM

Bristol Rovers' FA Cup third-round replay at home to Fulham will go ahead after the pitch at the Memorial Stadium passed a morning inspection.Local Premier League referee Lee Probert assessed the playing surface at 10am on Tuesday and was happy with the conditions.

The tie, which had to be postponed a week ago due to a waterlogged pitch, had been in doubt once again after persistent rain in Bristol over the weekend.

Rovers' home League One game against Walsall on Saturday was played in driving rain and a swirling wind, with puddles visible on the playing surface at the end of the game.

Bristol Rugby Club then played a Heineken Cup fixture against Cardiff at the Memorial Stadium on Sunday.

A statement on the club's official website read: "There is no other inspection planned and the club does not anticipate any further problems. The ground is still soft but because of the covers there is no surface water."

Groundstaff have been working 20 hours a day to get the tie on and the club has spent in the region of £45,000 on a special inflatable cover to protect the pitch.
