Rovers, Rams & Bees win shoot-outs

Tue 22 Jan, 11:15 PM

All three FA Cup third-round replays went to penalty shoot-outs on Tuesday night, with Bristol Rovers, Derby and Barnet emerging victorious.Fulham's miserable season took a turn for the rose after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Rovers at the Memorial Stadium.

Roy Hodgson has yet to see his side win and they crashed 5-3 on penalties after the third-round replay finished 0-0 after 120 minutes.

A muddy pitch sapped the match of much quality and the Premier League strugglers then had defender Dejan Stefanovic sent off for a second yellow card for a late tackle on Chris Lines in extra-time.

Jimmy Bullard missed Fulham's first spot-kick in the shoot-out but the Pirates were impressive from 12 yards, scoring all five with Craig Disley blasting home the crucial fifth.

Another Premier League side Derby needed penalties to see off Sheffield Wednesday 4-2 on penalties at Hillsborough, where the game had ended 1-1.

The Owls made a flying start and needed only 10 minutes to take the lead.

Steve Watson provided the finish after Jermaine Johnson was afforded too much time and space on the right wing and his cross was steered past keeper Lewis Price by the veteran midfielder from just inside the area.

Derby almost went two down on the half hour when centre-back Lewin Nyatanga was forced to clear off the line after Johnson caused more havoc.

But the Rams emerged fired-up after the break and Kenny Miller found space in the left-hand corner of the box and curled an exquisite shot around keeper Lee Grant.

Derby then shaded the rest of the encounter and profited when Kenny Lunt and Glenn Whelan missed in the shoot-out.

League Two Barnet also caused a shock beating their League One rivals Swindon 2-0 in the penalty shoot-out at Underhill, where the tie also finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra-time.

The Robins took the lead three minutes before the break when Jamie Vincent threaded a ball through to striker Billy Paynter, who fired home from a tight angle.

But Barnet refused to lie down and they were level with a goal inspired by star player Jason Puncheon.

The winger skinned Vincent, raced to the bye-line and then his low cross was turned into his own net by Paynter.

The Bees then had Michael Leary sent off for a two-footed lunge on Sofiene Zaaboub.

But they kept their nerve, took the game to the wire and then saw Swindon miss all four penalties in a dramatic shoot-out while Joe O'Cearuill and Anthony Thomas both hit the target for Paul Fairclough's battlers.
