While the Chinese disposed of the six-times World Championship finalist, his countryman Liu Chuang failed to reach their home ranking tournament, going down narrowly 5-4 to Simon Bedford.

Bradford's Bedford next faces Andy Hicks, while Li comes up against Martin Gould. They are three matches from the televised stages in China.

Bedford, 18, who qualified for the Crucible last season, went 2-0 up before he was pegged back to 2-2. He then moved within a frame of victory before Liu levelled again.

Bedford recorded visits of 41 and 44 in the decider.

Another 18-year-old, Stephen Craigie of Newcastle, secured a 5-4 win over Lee Spick, who was playing on crutches after breaking his ankle recently.

Craigie was 3-0 down before rallying to take the match to a final frame - he potted blue and pink to finish off Spick.
