Davis returns to winning ways in Utah
Two-times Olympic champion Shani Davis won his first World Cup gold medal of the season when he captured the 1000 metres title at Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City.
Davis posted a time of one minute and 7.20 seconds to beat Canada’s Denny Morrison by 0.19 seconds. Stefan Groothius of the Netherlands finished third.
“It’s just nice because the beginning of the season was rough, a really slow start,” said Davis, who previous best result of the season had been fourth.
“I had a lot of doubt coming into this competition but drew a lot of energy from the crowd. I’ve never seen so many people out here cheering for speed skating.
I just tried my best not only for myself but for the people out there cheering.”
In the women’s event, Canadian Christine Nesbitt continued her impressive start to the season, edging Heather Richardson of the USA.
Nesbitt finished in a time of 1:13.36 ahead of Richardson (1:13.99) and Ireen Wurst (1:14.51), while Richardson also picked up bronze in the 500m.
“This is the first time I’ve won two (medals),” said Richardson. “I’m happy with it.”
