Manager Fabio Capello has spelled out the importance of discipline and team movement to reviving the fortunes of England. The Italian reiterated the fact that only 38 per cent of Premier League players are available to him but insisted English players are tactically adept.
Asked what he was aiming to produce as the finished article, the England manager said: "Disciplined on the pitch, with good movement as a team, and at the same time capable of stressing the qualities and abilities of each individual player.
"English players are tactically fine, they know how to move tactically. But every coach has his own ideas and characteristics.
"The England players will have to do what I ask of them. Against Switzerland what I asked over three days in terms of team movement and schemes was performed at 80 per cent.
"I've found the players well disposed and eager. I am very satisfied with their attitude.
"I had seen most of them in action before, but watching them on TV doesn't allow you to appraise them off the ball.
"You can only verify their tactical level from the pitch. But in England there are club sides of very high tactical levels."
Capello will be at Wembley on Sunday for the Carling Cup final when he hopes to watch some key England players of recent years in action.
He added: "I'm hoping to see in action for the first time two England defenders and a midfielder - John Terry, Ledley King, Frank Lampard.
"The national team coach job consists of watching matches, evaluate the form of the players, and plan accordingly."
The Italian is happy with his progress in learning English, even if regional accents often prove challenging.
Capello said: "It is fundamental to speak the language, particularly before kick-off and during the interval, for tactical plans and psychological support. The latter can be more important at times than the former.
"But I'm happy with my language progress. The only difficulty, when I tour Premier League matches, is that different people in different accents talk to me, and in some instances I can hardly understand a word!"
Capello also corrected reports that he is paying £4,500 a week in rent for his flat,
"No, I pay £2,100 a week, and I was disappointed that the story was relayed in Italy without too many journalists asking me if it were true," he added.
Capello also had a warning for his old club AC Milan not to believe they had all-but overcome Arsenal to get into the Champions League quarter-finals following their 0-0 draw in London.
"I've not seen AC Milan so focused in the present season. They confirmed they are at ease on the European scene," he said.
"But Milan have to be careful - Arsenal can produce very interesting things in terms of spaces and speed, they are a threat."
Capello believes Manchester United and Chelsea will go through but has not written off Inter Milan overturning a 2-0 deficit against Liverpool.
"Liverpool also have to be very careful. They are always strong and dangerous in the San Siro."
