HONG KONG (AFP) - Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung has nominated his chief aide for election to the Birmingham City board in the latest twist to the protracted power struggle at the Premier League club, his company said Friday.
Yeung suffered a setback in his attempt to gain more influence at the club when its shareholders Wednesday rejected his proposal to co-opt Steve McManaman and Fan Zhiyi on to the board of directors.
Yeung, who holds a 29.9 percent stake in Birmingham, wanted to elect former Liverpool and England star McManaman and ex-China international Fan to act as his British representatives via his company Grandtop International Holdings.
Club managing director Karren Brady recommended shareholders at Wednesday's extraordinary general meeting reject the bid by Yeung, who angered chairman David Gold and co-owner David Sullivan by failing to complete a takeover last year.
Yeung reacted by nominating Grandtop chief executive William Chan for election to the board, Sammy Yu, chief operating officer of the company, told AFP Friday.
"It's not completed yet. We've nominated (Chan) but we'll have to wait until we see the answer from Birmingham City," Yu said.
He said Yeung had hoped to bring business expertise to the club.
"That was all about bringing business expertise to go into the board to help the club to develop but it seems that it's not going to happen now, or perhaps we have to wait until Birmingham City rearrange the EGM," Yu said.
He said they had not yet received any news from the club on the timing for the new EGM to consider Chan.
