Tsonga sweeps past Mahut in Marseille
Top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga clinched a comfortable 6-3 6-2 victory over Nicolas Mahut to progress through to the quarter-finals of the Marseille Open.
Tsonga stamped his authority on the match from the outset with an early barrage of belligerent groundstrokes on his opponent’s serve, and two breaks of serve ensued.
Mahut was unable to get himself established in the match at any point, and Tsonga was equally commanding in the second set as he seized the initiative with an early break.
Tsonga closed out the match with consummate ease to take the second set in convincing fashion, as he continued his fine run at the tournament.
The Frenchman will next take on compatriot Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the last eight after he beat Flavio Cipolla 6-3 6-0 in his second-round match.
Number three seed Janko Tipsarevic encountered few problems in beating David Goffin in straight sets, 6-4 6-2, to secure his place in the quarter-finals where he will take on Ivan Ljubicic with the Croat having beaten Karol Beck 6-4 7-6(1).
Sixth seed Alex Dolgopolov had to work harder to overcome world number 79 Lukas Rosol 2-6 7-6(1) 6-3 in their first-round encounter.
Dolgopolov had to scrap his way through a very tight second set on the tie-break after having lost the opening set, and he went on to close out the third with greater ease.
The sixth seed will next take on Michael Llodra of France after he beat Marco Chiudinelli 7-6(2) 7-6(3) in a hard-fought two-set battle.
