Chelsea coach seeks unique edge

Sat 22 Mar, 09:30 PM

Avram Grant wants Chelsea to become a "unique" side as he attempts to build on the legacy left by former coach Jose Mourinho.Chelsea have become a more attacking side since he replaced the 'Special One' as coach in September last year.

But in attempting to play fast-flowing football, Grant's side has become less than impressive in defence.

That fact was underlined against Tottenham in midweek when they threw away a 3-1 lead to share the spoils 4-4 at White Hart Lane. It would never have happened under Mourinho.

But Grant believes, that despite the midweek setback, the fans have enjoyed the change in style and he is determined to make sure his team becomes something out of the ordinary.

"First I want Chelsea to be unique," said the 52-year-old Israeli.

"We will take something from here, something from there. But we don't need to look how Barcelona plays or Arsenal plays, everybody has their own style. Of course we want to be entertaining, though.

"If you take the last four games we scored so many goals that supporters must have enjoyed it. I think most of the supporters have enjoyed Chelsea this season, they like what we are doing.

"As a manager it's slightly different, I would have liked to score three or four goals against Tottenham and to win!"

But Grant has been cheered by the form and the running power of England midfielder Joe Cole.

The former West Ham star scored twice against Spurs and Grant revealed that Cole is determined to run more miles than any other Chelsea player in a game.

Indeed, after their last Champions League game against Olympiacos, Cole emerged as the player who had run furthest.

The midfielder had run around six miles during the game and he is always among the first to look at the stats.

Grant explained: "Joe is running more kilometres in a game these days.

"Football is not just about running but you cannot play football without running. If you run more it means you will touch the ball more.

"Then it depends on you more than your opponent. If I see a player who I think needs to run more then we use the statistics to show him this.

"For Joe it's amazing because this year all the time he runs more and more kilometres in a game.

"I tell him to play, I tell all my players. I cannot tell you to play football and not be creative, especially the forward players.

"I want all my players to try and play creative and efficient football. You want your midfield to go forward and score goals."

But turning Chelsea into an attacking team like Arsenal is high on his agenda and Grant makes no secret of the fact he likes the way the Gunners have achieved it.

"When Arsene took over at Arsenal they called them boring Arsenal and I think not even one person would say it now.

"I think not even one person would say it about Chelsea this year. I think we have an exciting team playing good football. Sometimes we drop points but the team is on the right way. And to change, to go to a different way, won't come in one day.

"I don't think in Chelsea there is time to do it like it was in Manchester United before Alex Ferguson took his first trophy. But I think this is the right way to do it."

"In 10 years? If Chelsea continue to go in this way I'm sure they will be a big success and it will be good. But I think the situation even now is good."
