Assistant boss Ray Mathias refused to point the finger at Kevin Gallen after he missed a golden chance in their 1-1 draw with Peterborough. The former QPR striker somehow blazed wide in the dying seconds to leave the majority of the 14,528-strong crowd - a stadium:mk record - stunned.
A win would have moved MK Dons clear at the top ahead of second-placed Posh.
Aaron Wilbraham had given the Dons an early lead but Chris Whelpdale levelled before the break and although Dons dominated the second period, they failed to take their chances with Gallen the main culprit at the death.
And Mathias said: "We are disappointed with the point, we had chances and at the end one fell to the one person we would have wanted it too in Kevin Gallen, but these things happen and he's absolutely gutted.
"We didn't want a point before the game and you could see that in the way we played in the second half. But it's not a bad point - we are still top of the league and have a game in hand.
"There were a lot of chances in the second half and I thought we just shaded it with the ball going across their box and a few chances for Aaron Wilbraham as well. It was probably the two best sides in the division playing and we've got to give Peterborough credit because they came and put us under pressure in the first half."
