Stillie keeps Gills hopes alive

Sat 22 Mar, 07:15 PM

Goalkeeper Derek Stillie saved Max-Alain Gradel's penalty to keep Gillingham's survival hopes alive in a 2-1 home win over Bournemouth. The Gills cruised into an early lead through Andrew Crofts and Simeon Jackson's first goal for the club since joining from Rushden only for Jo Kuffour to pull one back to pave the way for Stillie's heroics.

The hosts came flying out of the traps with Jackson and John Nutter going close before they took a deserved lead after seven minutes through Crofts' 25-yard deflected drive.

Jackson then opened his account for Gillingham after 26 minutes when he latched onto Adam Miller's clever through ball before sliding the ball past Cherries goalkeeper David Forde.

But Bournemouth pulled a goal back from their first attack of the game two minutes later when Gradel's superb cross was sidefooted home by an unmarked Kuffour.

The veteran stopper then produced an excellent second-half save to deny Gradel from the spot after Sam Vokes had been felled in the box by Garry Richards.
