Felipe Massa takes pole again at Sepang.
Felipe Massa headed an all-Ferrari front row in qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, as McLaren proved unable to match the pace of the red machines in the top ten shoot-out at Sepang.
With the threat of rain still looming over the Kuala Lumpur circuit, all runners ventured out early on, with Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton the first to post times. However, those were soon rendered meaningless in the fight for pole as, first, Kimi Raikkonen and then Massa crossed the line more than half a second faster.
The second runs from both Ferrari drivers proved quicker still, with Massa again having the upper hand over his world champion team-mate, and even a switch to the softer Bridgestone rubber could not help McLaren, as Hamilton, in particular, struggled for grip as he attempted to keep pace with the Scuderia. In the end, the Briton had to settle for the outside of row two, as team-mate Kovalainen proved a tenth better off.
Behind the 'big four', Jarno Trulli pulled another stunning effort out of the bag to nab fifth, edging out the two BMW Saubers in the process. Robert Kubica got the better of team-mate Nick Heidfeld to claim the other third row slot, but the German may have a legitimate complaint that he was blocked on his final run as the earlier runners slowed dramatically in an effort to save fuel for the race on Sunday.
Fernando Alonso was similarly hindered, and had to settle for ninth, behind the Red Bull of Mark Webber, but ahead of Toyota number two Timo Glock.
