Russian skiing champion Natalia Matveeva has tested positive for the blood-booster EPO, according to the skier's coach.

The All Sport news agency said Matveeva, 22, who finished fourth in the sprint at last month's World Cross-Country Skiing Championships in the Czech Republic, failed the test at a World Cup event in Canada in January.

"It must be a mistake because I know that Natalia does not dope," the agency quoted Matveeva's coach, Tatyana Revina. "We just have to wait for the B sample to be analysed in the next day or two."

The Russian skiing federation and the Russian Olympic Committee could not be reached for comment.

Various Russian sports federations have been under scrutiny in recent months after several high-profile athletes failed drug tests.

Last month the International Biathlon Federation suspended Dmitri Yaroshenko, Ekaterina Iourieva and Albina Akhatova, all world or Olympic champions, after they tested positive for EPO.

Last year, five leading Russian race walkers received two-year bans after testing positive for EPO while seven others, including twice world 1,500 metres champion Tatyana Tomashova, were suspended for manipulating their drug samples.

  1. jokubasturcakovas - it is interesting where you are from. you see the world in pink colors. this tendency is used to be from 50-60s - i mean using pills, drugs and so on. maybe you know nothing about norwegian astma that allows athletes eating drugs? J.Muehleg was a rare example, when smb (not russian) was catched because of using doping. And this was because he was shown by all channels at the finish of 50-km race in 2002 and expression of his face told everything to all: "I feel myself very bad!"
I adress this shame not to Russia, but to olympic system. all of them know, but nobody say, they prefer to close eyes if they see smth. I'm sure that if german and norwegian athletes would be tested WADA could find many interesting facts))

  2. I can't believe that Russians can't stop popping drugs. Akhatova, Iourieva, Yaroshenko, Matveeva, Vassiliev- most of the starts of Russian wintersports are or were using doping. Ofcourse, it's logical, when you know all about bribes system in Russia and because of that you can easily get preparates you need. Shame for Russia.
