Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon admits the clash with Middlesbrough is a "massive game" in the context of the club's recent history. The Black Cats slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle at St James' Park which left them five points clear of the relegation zone with three matches left.
Gordon realises defeat against Boro, who they trail on goal difference, could leave them in a precarious position.
"We are still not safe. The Birmingham result last weekend went our way and that meant we were no worse off but that will not mean anything unless we use it to our advantage," Gordon told the club's website.
"It has become a massive game for us and Boro and we have to be ready for it. If we get the three points we are pretty much safe and that's a massive incentive.
"It's one of the biggest games in the club's recent history. There is so much riding on it, a massive prize for the winners."
