Daryl Impey will miss the Giro d'Italia after the horrific crash that marred his overall victory at the Tour of Turkey.

The South African is still in hospital after the crash, involving Theo Bos in the final kilometre of Sunday's final stage, resulted in a fracture of his first two lower back vertebra as well as facial injuries and a deep cut to his upper lip and the loss of a tooth.

The Barloworld rider is expected to be transferred to South Africa in the next few days and his team manager Claudio Corti has called for action to be taken against track star Bos.

Corti said: "I'm certain that the race judges will take the necessary disciplinary action and adequately sanction Theo Bos for what he did. If they do not, every sporting director will be able to tell their riders to use their hands to make room for themselves during sprints."

Lance Armstrong has weighed into the debate, saying on his Twitter page that Bos "deserves a long suspension" but the Team Rabobank Continental rider has defended his role in the incident.

He said: "I was completely boxed in while being pushed into the barriers on the left and, as a reflex, the one thing I did was to make an attempt to try to keep him away from me.

"I think I then hit a barrier foot with my front wheel and went crashing down immediately, together with Impey. Anyone who knows me well knows that I would never intentionally take the risk to cause a crash this way."

  4. Having just seen the replay, there is absolutely nothing Bos can say to defend or justify himself, blatant and outright dangerous cheating, out for the rest of the season and a hefty fine should be given. His DS should be investigated to see what orders he was given as well. A despicable act.

  7. it was a direct foul if you asked me, just like a soccer players do at the game grabbing jerseys and pulling, but doing that in cycling going 60km an hour is insane. First of all you never leave your hands off the handlebars during wild sprint.

  9. Daryl comes from a cycling family. (Father was an established pro in S.A) Daryl is also starting to show great progress & potential. A Terrible situation. For me, the crash looks very vindictive. But why? From the overhead camera angle, the shot (last 2KM) moves from Daryl, up to the lead rider. Then pans back down to Daryl. No theo seen. +-10 sec later suddenly, Theo appears and grabs Daryl? Was Theo too ambitious, focused & aggressive? Too used to pushing his way to the front (like on the track) that he acted too impulsively?! Maybe it was just timing and instinct to push, hit the barrier leg, start falling, grab Daryl's jersey... boom both down. All looks terrible. Not defending Theo just wondering why anyone would act like that with nothing to gain? Real shame. Theo hasn't started his road debut too well!? Hope everyone recovers and is back on form pronto.

  10. Watching the TV replay, it seems like he did it on purpose. It looks really horrid... he kind of throws him onto the barrier, knowing that he will be caught up in the fall as well. Bos must be a madman to do such a thing.
