Ireland lock Paul O'Connell has been named captain of a 37-strong squad for the 2009 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa.
Munster's 29-year-old O'Connell (pictured) was confirmed as captain by Lions manager Gerald Davies during a press conference at Heathrow Airport on Tuesday afternoon.
O'Connell, capped 62 times, was selected ahead of Ireland skipper Brian O'Driscoll, who captained the ill-fated Lions tour to New Zealand in 2005.
"Being selected as a Lion is a huge honour for a player and marks a major highlight in his career," said O'Connell, who has led Munster to two Heineken Cup titles and becomes the 10th Irish skipper of the Lions.
"I congratulate each of the players on their selection and look forward to a successful and rewarding tour to South Africa."
Surprise omissions from the squad include England's full-back Delon Armitage and flanker Tom Croft, Wales captain and flanker Ryan Jones, Wales scrum-half Dwayne Peel, and Scotland skipper and scrum-half Mike Blair.
"Naturally there were some tough decisions and there will be disappointed players but I am confident that this is a very strong and capable squad," said Lions head coach Ian McGeechan.
"Its composition reflects the form shown in the Six Nations and domestic rugby and has a balanced blend of experience and youth.
"Paul O'Connell has shown over his career that he is a natural leader both on and off the field. He leads from the front on the field and as a quality international has the respect of his fellow players all over the world."
Davies named only two recognised fly-halves in the squad, although Riki Flutey has played at 10 earlier in his career, meaning there is no place for England duo Danny Cipriani and Jonny Wilkinson.
The biggest surprise inclusion is centre Keith Earls, who has just one Ireland cap to his name. Earls's Munster team-mate Alan Quinlan has also done well to make the squad at the age of 35.
The squad includes 14 of the Grand Slam winning Ireland squad, 13 from Wales, eight from England and two Scots.
The Lions will gather on May 18 before leaving for the three-Test, 10-game tour on May 24.
They face a Highveld XV in their first match in Rustenburg on May 30.

as a munsterman even d o'callaghan was if-y for me but i agree with bigrich this time, the guy is just so bloomin annoying to play against, but he HAS to watch his fouling temperment or it could cost games.
Against Wales he was on the wrong side of the ball so much then when he swapped shirts at the end he got a green one.
Great comment, had me chuckling away.
yo orange u muppet, either he's the best ball carrier in the world or now one of the best, make your mind up!!!
Yes I've seen him play and he's an excellent player, quick, strong with good hands. I'd agree with you he's one of the best but you didn't say that did you!!
why do folk keep on talking about how big and physical sa are and not matching up to them .....nearly all the lions players have played the boks before for there respective countries and i dont think any off them will stand down from the challenge...these tours are why they became rubgy players. the selectors have done a good job and picked 99% of the squad on current form (something that woodward didnt do in 2005) so i cant see why the lions cant do well down there.
salamander urrr just go lick habana's @#$% or something cuz i dont know one person that has thought any of your comments were decent
Over the last 24 hours I have been called a plank, a fool, a muppet and an armchair watcher and I thought this was a debating side not a debasing site ! Clearly no-one has picked up the fact that I enjoy winding people up by making contoversial comments. So, lets see if there are any other names you juveniles can think of. Here goes !
Vickery and Shaw are on the trip because they play for Wasps. Not idea why Moyne is there. Ellis and Earl are there because Peel and Henson are not fit and John Hayes and Marcus Horan would not make a Lions trip if they picked 50 players and 12 props. Over to you Orange
Nice to see a balanced view from across the Irish Sea. Ireland deserve their 14 because they won the Grand Slam and Munster are the form team in Europe (although Cardiff Blues have a good arguement on that) But, I think Callaghan is in on merit and mainly because he is a first class nuisance. He aggravates everyone he plays against. Against Wales he was on the wrong side of the ball so much then when he swapped shirts at the end he got a green one. Just what you need against Bakkies, get in his face get him carded. Flannery's from the same mould. To beat the Boks you've got to beat them up. Their front row is suspect so Jenkins/Flannery/Murray need to do a job.
As a Munsterman, it may be a bit sound a bit blasphemous, but I feel that O'Callaghan is only on the tour because he partners O'Connell with Munster and Ireland. His temprement is hugely suspect and he's not the most intelligent footballer in the world. A capable work horse for Munster and Ireland but a Lion????? It shows how badly off we are for class second row forwards. Two out halfs is a gamble but I can see why they went that way. O'Gara won't last the tour as his channel will be targeted by the Wednesday SA teams.

COLIN A, reputation has gotten Shane Williams into the squad, but u go onto talk about Patterson, surely his form doesnt merit selection and he would similarly taken based on his reputation
Rory best should have been on this squad, if he were scottish welsh or english he would have been playing for his counry over the six nations, he is the victim of circumstances. but leaving out ross ford, i dont know about that. Not showing the form from the autumn but jesus he enormous
Chris Cussiter, albeit absent from starting line-ups for Scotland is still the best scrum half in UK and should be rightly peeved not to be on tour.Perhaps the new Scotland coach will see the light before next season, even if Geech and co cant see it!
Sadly, it seems that players with a reputation rather than recent potential that have been picked in some postions. Shane Williams hasnt done enough in recent months to oust the threat posed by even one of the Evans brothers.Paterson should be there even as an impact player, even if its just to be on the pitch for penalty opertunities in a tight game as Steven Jones doesnt have the strike rate! And no experienced, yet fairly young Lion backrow..Simon Taylor! The Welsh coaching element on the Lions team set up has certainly managed to get their influence in!
alexhart1984 Lets hope their experience can cope with the speed, physicality, fitness of the Bok's on hard ground at altitude. The Bok's will be out to hurt people, The Lions will be shipping players to S.A after the first couple of warm up games.
P.S Please can I have one sheet of paper my crayons to big to write on a stamp.
Also Ugo Monye could be a real surprise, big, strong, athletic and lots of pace. He could get in ahead of Williams if he plays well in the opening games
Agree with Munsterlfc, seen Earls play for Irelands youth teams a couple of times and he was promising then, it has come as no shock to me that he is starting to be recognised,
Don't really understand the front row, Vickery is experienced but has shown no spectacular form to merit inclusion. Also I'm sure Sheridan was picked because of his size and strength in an attempt to intimidate the tough boks front row, but didn't he get knocked out a couple of weeks ago. I think Horam may have been a better choice, more mobile and had a really god 6 nations, but I suppose you cant have the whole Irish team.
For those of you who aren't familiar with Keith Earls due to his lack of International Caps , take it from a devout rugby fan , he will be up there contending for player of the tour! The last time our little nation was excited about a new young centre he went by the name of O' Driscoll.........watch this space!!!
might as well have took wilkinson as there's not a decent kicker in the squad and mac calls himself a scotsman patterson still the best out there and stringer should have been picked as well
MARTINE go to you tube and look up 'o'leary baby' and tell me o'leary is lightweight... that's a typical example of his physicality. Enjoy!
Good squad but horan, hayes and stringer shud definitly be dare and patterson.
