Premier League - Fergie: We will beat Hull

Eurosport - Fri, 22 May 15:40:00 2009

Manchester United will not field a severely depleted team for their final Premier League match of the season against struggling Hull City on Sunday, manager Alex Ferguson has said.

2008-2009 Manchester United Alex Ferguson - 0

"It's been a good season but we don't want to end it on a losing note," said Ferguson after speculation that United, who wrapped up their third successive Premier League title last weekend, would rest their top players for Wednesday's Champions League final against Barcelona in Rome.

"I think it's important to a league that has the best integrity in the world," Ferguson said. "We will play our part in that. No matter which team I will play, I expect us to win."

Ferguson admitted he intended to rest some of his main players ahead of Wednesday's final but added: "No one should worry themselves unduly about the team I put out."

Darren Fletcher, who is suspended against Barcelona, Rio Ferdinand, who has returned to training after a calf injury, and Nani could all feature on Sunday.

Hull will start the final day of the league season one place and one point above relegation rivals Newcastle. Sunderland could also fall while Middlesbrough require a win to stand any hope of staying up.

  2. True, just because you have won the league does not mean you dont have to try until that big Champions League final. I think Hull are out... thats the bad thing.

  8. When I look at the bottom of the table, I think I'd like to see Newcastle, Boro and WBA get relegated. To their credit, given that this was their first season in the Premiership, I think Hull deserve to stay up. They've played an open attacking game, that has got them in trouble more often than not, but they've ruffled a few feathers on the way. I can't say the same for Newcastle or Boro, sorry.

  9. seriously everyone knows that if Utd field a weaker team its not to give anyone a chance, its with a champs league final as the next game - who would bloody do any different?? whoever relies on hulls result to stay up find themselves in that position because of their failure to accumulate points. to blame Utd or Fergie is just desperate. hey tankerman - i like your avatar - quality album the division bell.

  10. If the boot was on the other foot would any of the geordie teams feel as strong about this,NO.The position you are in is down to you,the outcome is also in your hands. All games are played over a season. If United play with a side that hasn't got all the first 11 in then thats up to Ferguson to preserve the players he needs for the next game, thats what we have a squad for.

  11. I suspect SAF will really take the p%%% in this one. Probably he will play Ferdinand, Fletcher etc. except he will play Fletcher in goal and Ferdinand and Van Der Saar up front to give them a chance to score against Hull - which shouldn't be too difficult.

    United will still win 3-0.

  18. This is the season when we could have had 6 down and three up - so poor have too many teams been - and sorted many things including fixture congestion for next season. When will the premier league learn that having the best league means only having the better teams in that league.
