Premier League - Jagielka and Yobo seal deals

Eurosport - Fri, 22 May 11:25:00 2009

Everton defenders Phil Jagielka and Joseph Yobo have both agreed new five-year contracts with the club.

Jagielka (pictured), currently recovering from a knee ligament operation which is likely to sideline him until the middle of August, was this week named the Toffees' player of the season.

He put in numerous impressive performances in central defence and scored the penalty which beat Manchester United in their semi-final shoot-out to book a place in the FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Reports earlier this week had suggested Yobo was unsettled at the club but his agreement of a new deal puts paid to any thoughts of him leaving Goodison Park.

"Everton are delighted contract negotiations with both Joseph Yobo and Phil Jagielka have now been successfully concluded," said a club statement.

"Both players will sign new five-year deals with the club imminently."

  1. Charlie, if you must comment at least make it sound intelligent, that comment from you is embarrassing. On a personal level going unbeaten at home is great, but it makes it all the more frustrating that we failed to be champions again this year. Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal all had slip-ups and we failed to take advantage because we were simply not good enough over the whole season. Next year we will not be so lucky and with Everton looking to break into the top four we may even finish 5th.

  2. (9) Moyes did sign injury-prone Saha. But I am with you. We need a Tuncay. Biased about Smudge. Always liked the lad.

  3. (9) Smith would be cheap and good filler for injuries. Overall, I agree w/your reply. There are also some fine wingers in Ligue 1. Something else to consider. Possibly a cheaper route to go, as well. What I love about Tuncay is his devotion to Boro. Fits perfectly in Moyes dressing room. Do not forget - Moyes was very close to signing Smudger for $3mil. He's worth the punt and would honour the crest. Just my thoughts, as a fan of the team!

  5. This is excellent news, for me Jagielka has been our most consistant player for a season and a half at a very high level. Yobo is a very good player but I only see him as cover for Jags and Lescott. I agree with comments in 08 , Tuncay would be a player I would love to see at Everton, but forget Owen and Smith..that is not the way forward for Everton - high wages for injury prone players well past their prime is thankfully not the way David Moyes works.I think Jacobson should be offered a deal, and then we can look for another couple of better quality players to go with Tuncay so that we are well equiped for a European campaign next season as F A cup winners. COYB !!

  6. What's great about this news for Everton fans is that Moyes proves once again his players are loyal to him and the organization. Tuncay would be a great addition to the squad. Ditto Morrison from Albion, if he's not a loonie! Or Park from United, if SAF is ready to give him up - me thinks he'd be brilliant if he had regular action. Jo should be signed as well, if at all possible. Could Owen fit up fron w/Jo, salarywise, as Saha, whom I do like and respect, always has the odd knock in him. Alan Smith would be another nice addition in midfield, and could give them an extra striker if some go down to injury. He'd come cheap, and with heart. Just some thoughts from a fan of the squad!

  7. Yobo is one of the best centre defender in this league, perhaps a little bit underrated. Jagielka has played well since joining frm Sheffield United and formed a very tough defending line alongside Yobo and Lescott and Baines. Wat Eve need is a RB,LW,RW and FW
