Benitez cools Alonso speculation

Fri 22 May, 04:44 PM

Rafael Benitez has moved to cool speculation that Xabi Alonso is leaving Liverpool.

The Liverpool manager has reacted to suggestions that the Spanish midfielder will play his last game for the club on Sunday at home to Tottenham before moving on.

This opinion was fuelled on Friday when Benitez pulled out of his weekly media conference at short notice. But the Spaniard has now said: "It's very clear, Xabi has three years left and we do not want to sell him."

Benitez has also hit out at frenzied transfer speculation around the club.

He said: "When you know your targets then you read things you can say, 'they have no idea'.

"I don't waste too much time on this. We have already had about 90 Spanish players linked with us. Today there were three names we do not even know.

"We have some money, not big money. But for me now it is not about how much, but how good they are for us."

  1. alonso is a god, better than carrick, fletcher, park, anderson, giggs, scholes, and hargreves, would be suicide to sell, come on rafa stop playing silly bugers

  2. Alonso is superb...but..if we can get 20million for him n get Barry, not bad business. Also the reason Lennon isn't playing is that when Keane went back to Spurs a pre contract agreement was written that Lennon will go to Liverppol at end of season and that he cannot play against them. He is not not injured.. Lennon to Anfield!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Xabi is the best passer in the world and has been consistent for us all season and scored some vital goals and is also a perfect penalty taker. It would be madness to sell him at all. The media and newspapers are lazy & full of @#$%. Xabi = Liverpool 4 life !

  5. Tevez is not a proven goal scorer. anyone who scores less goals than Kuyt should consider goalkeeping

  6. offload useless babel lucas and n'gog. Babel is weak mentally cant cope with pressure and expectiation. n'gog is woeful. We need tevez say at 25mil would be fair price. Secure him first then bring silva if we have extra money. At least Tevez is proven and established goal scorer in premier league

  7. Charlie, if you must comment at least make it sound intelligent, that comment from you is embarrassing. On a personal level going unbeaten at home is great, but it makes it all the more frustrating that we failed to be champions again this year. Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal all had slip-ups and we failed to take advantage because we were simply not good enough over the whole season. Next year we will not be so lucky and with Everton looking to break into the top four we may even finish 5th.

  8. Good to know that Alonso did not turn out to be the victim of this summer transfer. He is a very good player and Liverpool needs him badly. To raise money for this summer transfer, the best way is to sell Lucas, Ngog, Babel, Dossena and El Zhar.

Buying Tevez and Silva will be far better in strenghtening the team but just in case the EPL rules changes, I think we should have some English players in hand. So I think Rafa should consider for Lennon and Downing instead.

  9. Xabi is a great player, but I was disappointed that when Stevie G was injured he didn't drive the team forward, we can't keep relying on just 2 or 3 players.

  10. Thank u Mr Rafa for keeping alonso he's a vita player for us and he's the best in europ sell lucas and babel they are not good enough for liverpool team .. common fcl go for Tevez and silva....go go liverpool i love u so much.....

  12. Liverpool should keep Xabi Alonso, he worked out well partner with Mascherano which giving Steve Gerrard more space to move forward to support Torres. Sell Lucas and Babel, slow and useless sometimes.
And Liverpoor really need a left wings to support in case Reira injured.

    From jameslai888888, on Sat 23 May 4:04AM
  13. Hope Rafa keeps Alonso ...lovely player, great touch and passing and breaks up the play when we are defending. With Mascherano it allows Stevie G to bomb forward and cause havoc. If we can lure Teves as cover for Fernando and maybe Johnson on the left and Silva as a bonus option (for Europe ?) then we can get that title next year. Offload Babel, Lucas (poor) and N'Gog - not good enough for the Prem.
I think we've been unlucky this year, we've been better than Man Utd and I just think of games like the Spurs away game when we were all over them and hit the post/bar about four times and ended up losing and the draws at home against Stoke, Fulham and West Ham which we should have won (and would have done with Stevie and Fernando fit. Too many dodgy decisions at Old Trafford too - their luck's gotta run out soon I reckon !
Liverpool for the title next season - COME ON !!!!

Reading between the lines: Liverpool have had an offer for Alonso and the player has said he wants to leave. Liverpool aren't happy with the offer but will let the player go if the offer is improved. Until then, Liverpool's public stance is to say Alonso is going nowhere and will see out his contract.. I stake my reputation that Alonso won't be playing for Liverpool next season.

  19. i cant see why we have to change team that much.if we had won a few more home games league would be wrapped up 4 weeks ago.if we change players alonso is not the 1 to go.lucas is the 1st to go.ex liverpool players must wonder what he is doing at the club

  20. Lets hope Rafa's change of heart isn't too little too late. Remember saying his pursuit of Barry and seeming indifference to Alonso last year was going to come back and bite LFC. Here's hoping I'm wrong.
