Brown: Fergie can do what he wants

Fri, 22 May 15:51:10 2009

Hull manager Phil Brown claims Sir Alex Ferguson has the right to field whatever side he wants this weekend.

There has been much speculation over whether Ferguson will name a weakened team for Sunday's final Barclays Premier League encounter at the KC Stadium as he prepares for the Champions League final.

With Hull needing to win the game to guarantee their safety, such a move could anger Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Sunderland, all of whom are in a relegation battle with the Tigers. Yet with United, crowned champions last week, renowned for the depth of their squad, Brown says their second-string side would still worry him.

Brown said: "Sir Alex has had 22 years at one football club and he has earned the right to do whatever he wants to do on Sunday.

"He has got a massive game three days after this game. I would do the same - if I had the option I would play players that won't be playing in the game on Wednesday.

"Unless there was some kind of fear of fitness levels or injury concerns, I would pick the team accordingly. But if Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Sunderland have fears about what is coming out of Manchester United's changing room - I have as well."

  1. There you have it from the Manager of Hull. Professional common sense, and mark his words; even Utd's second team would give their all to get a win, and prove their capabilities to get into the first team. You might even argue that the second team would give an even harder fight, and Brown is rightly apprehensive about whatever team Utd field on the day. It would even be perfectly within Fergies right to field a team that he was sure would lose. We would also be justified in treating such a decision with contempt, but I believe this is impossible for two reasons: Fergie could no more field a team that he knew would lose than the earth could stop spinning round the sun, and even if HE thought they would lose, the players would bust a gut to prove him wrong. I hope and expect Utd to win, but good luck Hull. Go for broke and play the game of your lives, and you may just get a result, and there would be no shame in giving your all and still going down. You did give us all something to stir up the dominance of the top teams in the first half of the season, and it is a shame that you have not managed to keep out of danger, though I never thought you would be in contention for the top half of the table, this season anyway. I think you deserve more credit than you seem to be given sometimes. But what an opportunity for some of Utd's aspiring players to get some Premiership match experience and maybe prove their worth. It must be the envy of most Clubs to have such depth to a squad, and bodes well for Utds' future, and ill for their opponents. I do so hope! :)

  2. It is up to Sir Alec Fergusson to pick the team that he wants to play against Hull. Other managers have no right to tell him what team he can play. What kind of a game would we have if managers were allowed to choose another teams side for their own benefit and to cover their own inadequacies. What would these moaning minnies do themselves if their teams were good enough to be in Sir Alecs position with such an important game coming up against Barcelona. I was impressed with Alan Shearers comment today when he said that it was not in Sir Alecs nature to field a team that he did'nt think would win against Hull, but that he felt that because of the Champions League final coming up it was important that he should rest some of his best players, and he would do the same.

  3. I think Sir Alex is aware of the situation. He knows that he has his first duty to Manchester United, by which I mean the board members, the players and the fans. He knows that the Champions League Cup final is more important than the game against Hull. Obviously, certain players will be rested. However, he also realises that he has an obligation to field a side that is capable of delivering a victory on Saturday. When he fielded the FA Cup semi final side, it was noticably shy of a few "big name" players, yet for 120 minutes, this young team kept a very experienced Everton team at bay, only losing on penalties. I think every manager would do exactly the same if they were in Fergusons shoes. I fully expect to see some of the fringe players given a game, with some of the more establishged stars maybe warming the bench. I also expect United to win.

  5. It annoys me to think that the FA, EPL or whoever can say that a manager has put out a weakened side. This argument first came about back in the nineties, I think, when the league cup organizers felt that teams like Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool were fielding weakened teams to avoid injury for more important games. I feel as a manager I would have every right to field whatever team I believe on that day is capable of getting a result based on my tactics. By the FA and EPL intervening they are saying that the players on the 'weakened' side are @#$%. As a manager I would say I think they are great and suddenly my top players are @#$%. As someone said earlier Newcastle and Boro fielded weakened sides all season! Would there be a complaint if they suddenly put out a really strong team all of a sudden after the January transfer window. Man U should not be penalized for fielding a team from their huge squad.

  6. SAF puts out a team that he thinks can do the job on every occasion and the game against Hull will be no different.
The semi against Everton was a side capable of beating them, would Newcastle and Sunderland look upon this as a weak team. The Premiership is about being consistent and United have been that no matter what starting line up.
The teams in trouble now, should only be looking at themselves and not the opposition, it is there lack of consistency that sees them in that position

  7. Let's hope United's Academy side plus Fletcher and Rio for 30-60 mins give Hull a good game whether they win or lose we are proud of them all. Let's also hope the Geordies lose to Villa so they go down regardless!

Those Baggies fans were hilarious: "We're going down with the Geordies!"

  8. what is the problem if the Man United team is weaker just because its the last game of the season??

Regardless of it being the last game there will have been other teams in competitions that would have fielded weaker teams in earlier parts of the season which will have influenced the final league table and don't forget the table never lies and the teams in the bottom have simply been @#$%.
