Liverpool can complete a season unbeaten at home when they host Tottenham on Sunday - and captain Steven Gerrard believes it is the perfect opportunity to repay the fans.
The Reds have not gone a whole campaign without defeat at Anfield for 21 years but if they avoid losing to Spurs it will be the 10th time in their history they have achieved the feat.
"I think the supporters deserve it. They have given us terrific support once again over the course of the season," he said. "We have not got much to play for really but every time you put the Liverpool jersey on in front of your home supporters, the least they deserve is effort."
He added: "And if we go into it with that attitude, we can finish on a high with three points."
Liverpool need one point to guarantee finishing second behind United but, even if they lose, Chelsea will have to win and turn around a goal difference that is five fewer than Liverpool.
Having lost twice already to Spurs this season - in the league and Carling Cup - there will be an extra incentive for Liverpool to extend their unbeaten home league record to 30 matches, the fourth best in their history and the best for 28 years.
Gerrard believes the experience of this season's title race will mean Liverpool will mount an even stronger challenge next term.
"We are unfortunate not to have won the league but we can take a lot of positives from this season moving forward," he said.
"We've put in some terrific performances and played well as a team. We can use this experience and take big confidence into the next campaign.
"As far as trophies are concerned, we have finished empty handed, but we can be really proud of how we have performed. From maybe mid-December onwards we have shown championship-winning form."

IT'S A FACT THAT LIVERPOOL IS IN DESPERATE NEED OF A RONALDO OR ROBINHO WHO PROVIDE THE EXTRA PRESSURE OF OPPONENTS.....GERRAD, TORRES, REINA, ALONSO, ETC R GR8 BUT A TRICKSTAR WILL ADD THE MUCH NEED GEM TO LIVERPOOL WHO R REALLY TITLE CONTENDERS..........OWEN OR LENNON WOULD B BETTER THEN BARRY BCOZ WE HAV REIRA ON LEFT WHO HAS DONE A NICE JOB........
Alonso is superb...but..if we can get 20million for him n get Barry, not bad business. Also the reason Lennon isn't playing is that when Keane went back to Spurs a pre contract agreement was written that Lennon will go to Liverppol at end of season and that he cannot play against them. He is not not injured.. Lennon to Anfield!!!!!!!!!!!
number 19
well sorry 4 speakin the truth i do not have to send a comment that sounds intelegant i do not care so i think u need to get a life and start respectin wht people say
Well done LFC, I give salutation to the three stars General of Europian Football(STEVEN GERRARD) At least we have a very good team that can face the upcoming season. If we can start the next season in the same spirit that we ended this season, Trophies will roll into Anfield. We need to improve on the defensive line. Rafa need more funding!!!!!!
LFC for Live!!!!!!!
UNFORTUNATE NOT TO HAVE WON THE LEAGUE?
GET A LIFE GERRARD YOU @#$%.
Liverpool marketing should do better in terms of marketing the team in Asia. Currently Chelsea and M.U. are agressive in doing it and get tons of money from it. Its also a good time to rest some key players and test some of the young lads. Have been a supporter of liverpool for 20 yrs and counting. LFC for life! YNWA!!
Charlie, if you must comment at least make it sound intelligent, that comment from you is embarrassing. On a personal level going unbeaten at home is great, but it makes it all the more frustrating that we failed to be champions again this year. Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal all had slip-ups and we failed to take advantage because we were simply not good enough over the whole season. Next year we will not be so lucky and with Everton looking to break into the top four we may even finish 5th.
i hope that Liverpool will bring this season's momentum to the next season...
they were so close this season to winning the title.
go Stevie! Go Liverpool! :)
I'm looking forward to the 2009/2010 season! :)

lol all the liverpool players do have a heart dont they bless them. first we have fernando torres saying he wants to repay his fans and now we have gerrard saying he wants to repay the liverpool fans. shame the boro players cant do the same for us the only thing they have done is concede goals lose games and get us in relegation and also downing has repayed us by getting injured and spending 3 months on the sidelines

Manchester United are the champions of England.M.U.F.C
Armine H - how can you say Liverpool will win the premier league next year 100%? that must be the dembest statement i have ever heard. Liverpool might improve but united will be alot stronger is well and they will be more determined than this season to take revenge on liverpool for the defeat. You are so typical of a liverpool fan - its like you saying united will stay the same!! get a grip!
Oh dear, I thought Gerrard wanted to "repay" his fans with some of the money they have to spend on season tickets. The club only pay him 7.8 million pounds a year salary.BIG DEAL GERRARD TALK IS CHEAP.
Well done Liverpool fc players, coaching staff, & supporters
We need to improve on wide areas, defending system, we conceded many goals on short pieces. We stop losing points on small teams. Best attacking team of season.
Long live Liverpool fc, long live Rafa.
Pretty dumb and insulting thing to say to fans - the same effort and desire should be there for every game, has he forgotten who pays his huge wages every week.
Liverpool will win the Priemere League next year for 100%.
lets all wish the liverpool youth team the best of luck to-night
