McGhee expects duo to leave

Fri 22 May, 04:00 PM

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee expects the visit of Kilmarnock to be the swansong for out-of-contract pair Graeme Smith and Stephen Hughes.

Smith, who has attracted interest from Hibernian, will assess his options over the summer while former Leicester midfielder Hughes has been linked with a return to Rangers or the Coca-Cola Championship.

McGhee said: "I think Stephen Hughes and Graeme Smith will go. I think there will be a demand out there that will make it difficult for them to stay."

Bob Malcolm, who has not featured since December, will also leave but McGhee hopes to keep the rest of his squad intact.

Motherwell are awaiting developments between FC Midtjylland and on-loan midfielder Maros Klimpl in a bid to sign the Slovakian on a permanent basis while Brian McLean looks set to extend his stay.

McGhee added: "We still hope to get a deal with the Danish club for Maros. He has got to do a deal with his own club to allow him to accept what we can afford to give."
