Single change expected for Shrews

Fri 22 May, 01:58 PM

Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson will be forced to make one change to his matchday 16 for the play-off final against Gillingham after Steve Leslie was sent off in the semi-final second leg against Bury.

The substitute midfielder was shown a straight red card just a minute into extra time at Gigg Lane meaning he will miss the trip to Wembley. Shrews initially announced their intention to appeal the decision but decided against it feeling there was not enough evidence to support a claim.

Defender Mike Jackson, who has been sidelined since February, has not recovered in time from his knee injury, while striker Dave Hibbert has suffered a recurrence of a foot problem and will also miss out, although he has been a peripheral figure of late.

Otherwise Simpson has a fully-fit squad and he insists his players have given him everything and more in the build-up to the highly-anticipated final.

"The preparations have been great leading up to it," he told PA Sport. "We're getting most people out fit. Everybody wants to be involved and I have to say they've done everything they possibly can to make it difficult for me to pick a 16 out of it.

"It means a lot to everybody - the county, the town, the football club - every single person who's connected with it will benefit from us getting promoted to League One. And we've got to do all we possibly can to try and achieve that."
