Zenit spark £20m Arshavin scramble

Sun 22 Jun, 08:15 AM

Dick Advocaat has confirmed Andrei Arshavin, a target for Newcastle, Manchester City, Everton and Arsenal, wants to leave Zenit St Petersburg. The Russian star - rated at around £20million - had a brilliant domestic campaign last season helping Zenit to the league title and UEFA Cup.

And Arshavin added to his reputation when he starred in Russia's thrilling 3-1 Euro 2008 quarter-final victory over Holland - scoring once and setting up another in a brilliant display.

The 27-year-old is being tracked by clubs from Italy, Spain, France, Germany and England - with the likes of the Magpies, City, Toffees and more recently Arsenal said to be interest. It is also thought that Roman Abramovich's Chelsea could enter the hunt for his signature.

And now Zenit boss Advocaat has confirmed that Arshavin want to move to one of Europe's biggest leagues.

"Andrei has told us that he wishes to change clubs," said Advocaat. "At present in the way of offers it is quiet.

"The situation may well change after the game against Holland for the national side."

  1. to all the people saying £20m is too expensive; when you put into prospect that darren bent was bought for £16m, it's actually quite low. this guy is world class, watching him in the russian league he was good, but i questioned myself as to whether he can compete against the best, then this euro has reassured me that he is quality. although, if i'm being perfectly honest, i rate pavlyuchenko more....

  2. Hey if Arshavin is bought for around 15 million, that will be less than Darren Bent, and surely unfair! ha ha ha!

  3. 20 Million? Why not? How much did Chelsea pay for Chevchenko & what good did he do them? This one is hotter than july. But I think the very big clubs might snifle him.

  4. Heh, everyone said Torres was to expensive, but lad is worth double that now!

  5. He's already 27. And at 20 million , it won't be Wengerish.

But yes please, if Hleb (also 27) eventually goes, we should go ALL OUT for him. Hopefully he's thinking of playing real NEAT football more than his bank account size.

This guy can do almost EVERYTHING. I BET EVEN CENTER HALF. Pure all action super hero.

Expensive think newscastle should try and sign him so they can even challenge for good spots and not fighting relegation..well we chelsea don't need him..we want kaka

  9. He looks the type of player who could fit in with arsenal's style of play. Some of the russian goals,to which he played an integral part, could have come straight out of the arsenal playbook. But will a £20 million price tag frighten off Wenger and the board? They're not known as the bank of england for nothing.

  10. Arshavin ia a great player. He had a very good Euro so far. I think he is just the kind of player for Arsenal. Although 20 million is a bit too high, between 15 and 17 million is right.

  11. I saw the game yesterday, and he was brilliant, top class but 20 mil. pounds is alot. around 15 mil.pounds would be a more reasonable amount.
I think he should go to Chelsea since him and Roman would get along very well. (both russians). Chelsea have the cash, but the question is.. if he is good enough. But if not chelsea, I think totenham should splash the cash. I think they are going to challenge for a top 5 spot or 4, under Ramos IF..... they get some better players to strenghen the squad. They already have Modric who is also expensive but yet again very talented. So the future looks bright for Arshavin!!!

  12. Its Tottenhams fault. Haha. They spent 18.5 million pounds on Modric... Obviously as a result, Arshavin's price goes up by around 5 million...

  13. expensive just look at the price on ronaldo now thats a joke

  14. Kudos to Arshavin. A very skillfull player. But 20,000 pounds it a bit on the higher side. Though he his a very intelligent player that can create a goal at the unexpected time.

  15. I think £20million is a liitle bit expensive
