Great Scott At Donnington!

Sun 22 Jun, 06:09 PM

Scott Redding ended a 35-year wait for a British win in the 125cc Grand Prix class with a win on his first visit to Donington Park.

The 15-year-old from Gloucestershire qualified in fourth place on the grid for this afternoon's British Grand Prix but was quickly up to second position on his Blusens Aprilia.

The teenager hounded leader Andrea Iannone into an error and after the Italian crashed at the Craner Curves Redding coasted to a comfortable win in his home race by more than five seconds from series leader Mike Di Meglio to thrill a capacity crowd.

The last British rider to win a 125cc race was Chaz Mortimer in the Spanish Grand Prix of 1975 - some 451 races ago.

Redding said: "It is unbelievable.

"I've never had a podium before and to win at my home Grand Prix is an incredible feeling.

"It was difficult conditions out there but I've always ridden well when it's been windy and the bike felt good.

"When Iannone crashed out I knew that I had the race won and just had to focus and bring it home.

"I'd only ever done three laps of Donington before and that was on an 80cc bike in the rain four years ago.

"But to win in front of the British fans is a dream come true. I wasn't allowed any champagne on the podium because I'm too young but luckily Mike gave me some of his.

"I should be back at school tomorrow but I am off to Assen for the next race and hopefully I can get another podium soon."
