Idowu Leaps To Victory

Sun 22 Jun, 04:09 PM

Phillips Idowu recovered from an injury scare on his first jump to win the European Cup triple jump title in Annecy on Sunday afternoon.

Idowu over-rotated but did not hurt himself when he landed badly and bounced back to take the lead in the second round with an excellent clearance of 17.29metres.

The 29-year-old world indoor champion then improved to a superb 17.46m which only he and three other global rivals have achieved this year.

Idowu, who tops the rankings with a leap of 17.55m set at the beginning of the month in Crete, rounded off his consistent performance when he cleared 17.13m.

His display followed Allan Scott's fourth place in the 110m hurdles in 13.70seconds and saw the Norwich Union GB men's team overnight lead reduced to one point ahead of Poland and four in front of France.

The women's team dropped from third to fifth after Zoe Derham placed second last in the hammer despite throwing a season's best while Rebecca Peake's 14.84m was the worst of the shot competition.
