British and Irish Lions call-ups John Hayes and Tim Payne will be rushed into the starting line up for the final provincial match against the Emerging Springboks at Newlands on Tuesday.

Irish tighthead Hayes arrived in South Africa on Saturday, while England loosehead prop Payne flew in on Monday morning and went straight into training.

Their selection follows a dismal Lions scrummaging performance against the Springboks in last Saturday's first test defeat and a niggling back problem for loosehead Andrew Sheridan.

"We will look after them quite carefully but Andrew Sheridan's injury is taking longer to resolve than we had hoped," coach Ian McGeechan told reporters on Monday.

"We were second-best at the scrum in the first test. We have no complaints, we just have to do something about it."

Tighthead Phil Vickery, whose test place is uncertain after being trounced by prop Tendai "Beast" Mtawarira on Saturday, is on the bench for Tuesday's game and McGeechan said he would "no doubt play a fair part in proceedings."

McGeechan said there was still a positive vibe in the squad with all the players still pushing for selection to the test squad.

"On Tuesday, we will be looking at some players with a view to combinations for next Saturday," he added.

"We won't pick the test side until Wednesday and the way the players trained today, it's clear they all want to put themselves in the front line for selection."

McGeechan expected the Emerging Springboks to provide a thoroughly professional, skilful challenge to his side.

"We see it as our fourth test, there's a lot in it for them because they have a full international season ahead of them. It will be our most difficult game on tour outside of the tests," said the coach.
