Shirtliff played with Wilson at Hillsborough between 1990-93 and made over 300 appearances in the heart of defence for the Owls.

The 48-year-old also played for Charlton, Wolves and Barnsley before retiring from the game in 1997 to become youth-team coach at Oakwell.

He then moved on to Leicester's Academy before taking up the role of assistant manager at Mansfield in 2005 where he later became manager.

He had been assistant to Ronnie Moore at Tranmere for the past two seasons but will now make the move down to Swindon to link up with Wilson.
