Tim Payne became the second prop to be called up by the British and Irish Lions in four days after concerns about the back injury of his England team mate Andrew Sheridan.
"Tim Payne has been called up to provide essential cover for the front row as Andrew Sheridan is responding slowly to treatment for a sore back following the Southern Kings match," coach Ian McGeechan said in a statement.
"We simply can't go into this week without sufficient cover at loosehead prop as we play the Emerging Springboks and the Springboks in the space of five days.
"Tim will arrive match-fit having played in all three of England's recent international matches against the Barbarians and Argentina. We are still hopeful that Andrew Sheridan will respond to the medical regime he is currently undergoing."
Welshman Gethin Jenkins started at loosehead in Saturday's first Test and looks certain to maintain his place for next Saturday's second Test in Pretoria. The Lions also play the Emerging Springboks in Cape Town on Tuesday in the last of their non-Test games.
Last Thursday they called up Ireland's John Hayes to replace Scot Euan Murray, who was ruled out of the tour with an injured ankle.
Hayes and Adam Jones are likely to fight it out for the Test starting berth after Phil Vickery was given a torrid time by Springbok man of the match Tendai Mtawarira.

I don't get it really? The pack that finished the game seemed to be spot on. Went back to winning scrums and line-outs (albeit their own!), providing some ball for the backs who were superb in the second half. Start with the lot that finished and we might just come back!
Also, I couldn't help but think Shane Williams would have probably finished the opportunities that Monye didn't... Or was it just me? He should at least be on the bench if not starting. Think I saw on another article someone commented asking do you think the South Africans wouldn't play Habana just because he had a couple average/poor games? Of course they would!
Lions are meeowing at the moment,
they should call them the after my kitty cat ..sniffles or maybe snuggles...
A prop of Vickery's experience should, with the help of his second row and wing forward, should have been able to deal with the beast. Also the touch judges are supposed to be experienced and qualified referees - even if if the ref is on the other side of the scrum, the touch judges should have been able to inform the ref that the binding was illegal
I know Vickery got a bit of a going over, however, I reckon at least 3 of those penalties should have been for the beast driving in. On the replays you can clearly see him shuffle his back side out then drive in on Vickery's chest. This stopped when the ref went round tat side and Jones came on. I am not saying that Jones shouldnt play but Jenkins and Vickery were clearly the best props on the tour so far. I think Vickery should stay on the bench though.
white is a far superior scrummager to most of the props on the tour and he is probably one of few props in the world that could tame the beast, but his mobility around the field isnt particularly good, and they will want for some one a bit more spriteley.
I'm with Sean D- White would be a great addition and i hate the P.R.I.C.K!!! He would'nt be intimidated although i'm not sure if he's stay on the pitch long- Sheridan right hand over the top lol!!!
White is just as bad as vickery .
