6.23pm - That's an incredible achievement for Glover, particularly the way he fought back into the reckoning with some excellent shotmaking just as it seemed as if he would crumble away.

He's thoroughly earned this win ahead of sentimental crowd favourites Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Ricky 'Tin Cup' Barnes.

But congratulations to all the players for turning a damp, soggy US Open into a scintillating golf championship topped off by a stunning, edge-of-the-seat finale.

6.19pm - LUCAS GLOVER ROLLS THE BALL STRAIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CUP! HE HAS WON THE US OPEN!!!!

6.18pm - Ricky putts... and it looks good... no, it looks great... IT'S GOING TO GO - BUT NO!!!! AMAZINGLY THE BALL STAYS UP!!! IT'S TWO FOR THE US OPEN FOR LUCAS GLOVER!

6.17pm - Glover is a little over-tentative with his putt, and he's left himself a nervy three or four feet to finish off...

Which means that Ricky Barnes has a chance after all, if he can roll in this very difficult one...

6.16pm - Barnes has left himself a half-chance, but it's that tough sidehill putt which has had them all baffled this afternoon.

And Glover is taking no chances with his putt, stalking it from all angles...

6.13pm - From 146 yards Lucas Glover errs on the side of caution, hitting to the back edge of the green.

But it's a tough two-putt from there - and Ricky Barnes isn't out of this quite yet. If he can grab a birdie from the centre of the fairway then he could cut the lead to one, and potentially get us into a play-off!

6.08pm - Duval's putt misses - and Glover has simply bunted an iron down onto the fairway, where everyone else in the field has hammered drivers up the fairway.

Up on the green Ross Fisher's birdie putt stops an inch or two short. It's been a great effort by the Englishman - particularly that eagle on 13 - but his first Major won't be coming today.

6.06pm - It's in - and unless Duval holes his huge birdie putt on 18 Lucas Glover will have a two-shot lead coming up the final hole!

6.04pm - Lucas Glover runs his long putt on 17 up to 30 inches from the cup. If he pops that one in he'll need a par up the last for victory - and may even be permitted a bogey.

5.58pm - Glover grabs his destiny with both hands with a perfect shot to the 17th green. He's on the right tier, and this should be a simple two-putt par.

Up on 18 Phil Mickelson could get no closer than 30ft with his pitch second, a poor return after a perfect drive...

...AND THE PUTT RUNS JUST BY THE EDGE!

Phil Mickelson finishes the US Open at two under par: Lucas Glover has this in the bag - so long as he can hold his nerve... though David Duval will have other ideas.

5.55pm - Fisher's weak attempt at his par putt curls wide of the cup, and for him the tournament looks like it's over...

And now Duval misses his par putt as well. Lucas Glover is back in control of the US Open!

5.54pm - Ross Fisher has a go at the birdie putt... but it misses, and runs well past. He looks like the thinks that could spell the end of his challenge - but as long as he drains his par putt he's still in this.

5.51pm - Mickelson booms a perfect drive up 18, which today is playing so short that the approach is a simple pitch-and-putt : he's very chance of a birdie after that one.

But back on 16, Lucas Glover looks like being the man standing between Mickelson and the trophy: he delicately rolls in that birdie putt, and he's back to four under par!

5.50pm - Duval likes his shot on the 17th while it's in the air... but he's under-clubbed! He's in that same nasty spot that Mickelson was in...

Here comes Ross Fisher, and the Englishman hits a nice one to the heart of the green: he'll be putting up the tier, but it's a decent result.

5.48pm - Lucas Glover steps up to his ball on the 16th, fires in his customary draw shot... and rips the ball to six feet! What a shot!

That's a statement of intent if ever there were one: he wants to win this tournament... and ahead on 17 Phil Mickelson helps him on the way to doing so as he undercooks his par putt and sees it miss by a mile.

5.42pm - What a time Ross Fisher has had on these greens this week... yet another birdie putt slips by. He's just not reading them right, from the looks of things. The putting stroke itself looks fine.

Somebody who IS reading the greens right, however, is David Duval - HE DRAINS HIS BIRDIE AND IS TIED FOR THE LEAD!!!! That's three birdies in as many holes for the comeback kid.

5.40pm - Mickelson shoves his tee shot left on 17, and the ball sits down in the rough leaving a tricky chip...

The crowd are willing him on, though: "Let's go Ph-il!" they keep chanting. I've a feeling they'd like him to win...

5.38pm - Ross Fisher keeps on bouncing back, and after a perfect drive up 16 he's hit a beautiful approach in to 12ft - he desperately needs a birdie at this stage if he's going to win a first Major.

And at the same hole David Duval, playing with Fisher, also hits a good approach. Both could jump into a share of the lead at three under!

5.34pm - It's getting VERY nervy now, with Phil Mickelson slapping his straightforward putt on 16 well past and miles wide ...

Back on 15, Glover misses that par putt - and on 16 Hunter Mahan ends up three-putting from the front fringe.

So here's Phil with his par putt from 10ft... and he's hammered it straight in! Gutsy stuff from Lefty, and that puts him within touching distance of victory!

5.32pm - Lucas Glover's great shot from the rough on 15 put him on the green, but he faces a long two-putt - while Ricky Barnes almost knocked the pin out before running through the back.

But what's this? Glover has thundered his birdie putt a good 10 foot past!

5.29pm - Atrocious piece of bad luck for Hunter Mahan - who has looked very impressive today - as his second shot to the 16th lands in the cup, and ricochets back across the green! Suddenly he's struggling for par when his shot should have set up a birdie!

5.25pm - Very gutsy bogey putt by Ross Fisher to limit the damage on the 15th.

In normal circumstances you'd make Mickelson the favourite to finish this championship off, but it's tough to call. Even Mike Weir, still level par, isn't out of it yet; anyone finishing on one or two under might yet turn out to have done enough.

5.22pm - Glover has missed the fairway on 15: that's spelt bogeys for everyone who's done that so far - as Ross Fisher proves with a very unlucky attempt at his par putt. His ball hit David Duval's ball marker, leapt in the air and died - and he's left with a tricky par attempt.

To rub salt in the would David Duval rattles in his birdie putt ! Incredibly, the 2001 Open champ is still in this tournament!

5.16pm - Further down the leaderboard, Ian Poulter is at the end of the best round of the day: Poults is three under today , recording a final round of 67, but still four over for the championship.

5.14pm - A wobble from Phil Mickelson! He's putted up to three feet from the back of the 15th green, but has missed his par putt and is back to three under par!

5.10pm - Ricky Barnes seems to have found something: he two-putted 13 for his birdie, and hit his tee shot straight over the pin on 14, even if he had one bat too many. Lucas Glover, meanwhile, also overhits and has a 30ft putt for birdie.

Up on 15, though, there's trouble for Ross Fisher as he pulls his tee shot into the thick stuff on the left. He'll need a pitch and putt to get a par from there.

5.07pm - Mickelson hammers his shot out of the tough grass on the 15th, and manages to fly the ball all the way up to the green - a great recovery from where he was.

5.01pm - David Duval hits a perfect tee shot on the short par-3 14th that almost lands in the hole. That'll be a birdie and back to level par.

4.59pm - Ricky Barnes finds the 13th green in two, and will have a chance at an eagle to get himself back in it.

Meanwhile, up on 15 Phil Mickelson has put his tee shot in the rough - and it's not a good hole to do that on since just reaching the green becomes doubtful.

4.55pm - Ross Fisher stands over this four-footer for eagle... AND IT'S STRAIGHT IN THE MIDDLE!FISHER'S GOT HIS EAGLE AND IS ONE OFF THE LEAD!

Back on the tee, Lucas Glover has bombed his drive into the rough: it'll stop him reaching the green, and he will lay up.

4.52pm - Mickelson has a 20ft putt for birdie on 14, and rolls it up next to the hole for a par.

4.49pm - Now here comes Ross Fisher on the 13th... and he too has nailed a perfect second shot to within a few feet! FISHER CAN MATCH MICKELSON'S EAGLE!

What a way to make up for that disappointing three-putt on the last... but he needs to pop that putt in to make it count!

4.45pm - PHIL MICKELSON GETS HIS EAGLE - AND HE SHARES THE LEAD!

What a stunning finish!!!!

4.41pm - Tiger misses his birdie putt on the final hole , and it's all over for this year. The leaders won't come all the way back to level par, and Tiger knows it.

4.40pm - NO! Disaster for Ross Fisher, whose brilliant birdie putt on 12 almost drops... but then he misses the tap in for par!

And then Phil Mickelson hits the shot of the championship on 13 - an incredible approach to three feet on the par-5! HE'S GOT THAT PUTT FOR A SHARE OF THE LEAD!

4.37pm - What on earth is going through Lucas Glover's head just now? He's a two-shot lead, seven holes left, and with Mickelson

You know what, though? Looking at the leaderboard, if Tiger birdies the last to get to one under par you wouldn't say it was out of the question that he might to do this.

4.34pm - Ricky Barnes's fall from grace is complete: he does well to give himself a makeable par putt, but he misses it and is now just two under par. That's six over for the day.

Up on the 12th Ross Fisher has played a beautiful second shot to the 12th that gives him a chance at a birdie.

4.31pm - Tiger stands over his birdie putt on 17... BUT HE MISSES IT!!! That's surely the end of the story for the world number one. It'll be another high finish in a Major, but his putting just hasn't been good enough.

But another big-name player is right back in it: Phil Mickelson rolls in a stupendous 50-footer for birdie on 12 to go two under!

4.27pm - Sergio's had a pair of late birdies to get himself back to level par for the day and two over for the championship. As ever, if he'd holed half the birdie chances he's given himself he might have been right up there.

4.23pm - Woods again hits a perfect iron on 17 - it's straight on line, but pulls up seven feet short of the hole! It's a brilliant birdie chance for Woods!

4.22pm - Ross Fisher secures par with an awesome chip that very nearly goes in... but back on 11 Ricky Barnes has just driven into waist-deep rough after that good par save on 10.

4.18pm - Hunter Mahan has just birdied 11 to get level with Fisher at two under par, while back on 10 Glover hits a lovely lag putt to earn solid par.

Tiger's birdie effort on 16 is bad: it runs well past the cup, and although he holes the tricky par putt it seems like it's all over for the world number one - barring a pair of miraculous shots on the final two holes.

Ross Fisher seems to have hit a perfect shot to 11, but in the stiffening breeze he ends up being half a club short.

4.15pm - Tiger's swing is absolutely in the groove now , as he hits another perfect iron to the 16th. It's the right club this time - unlike the miscalculation on the last - and he'll have a 12ft chance to get back into this yet again. The man just doesn't know when he's beaten!

4.13pm - Huge credit to Barnes for a brilliant second shot from the rough on the 10th that pitches on the green before running off the back down the slope.

And now Lucas Glover hits a beauty to the heart of the green. He's not going to give up without a fight.

4.10pm - McIlroy is in the sand on the ninth - but comes within a millimere of holing his bunker shot! It'll be a par and it's a decent showing from Rory, but that first Major will have to wait... for another month at least.

Sadly, Ross Fisher's birdie putt on 10 misses by a whisker - but he's evidently enjoying himself now, and clearly knows he can win this thing.

4.06pm - Henrik Stenson is safely in at one over after a birdie at the last for the clubhouse lead. McIlroy will need a birdie at the ninth to join him on the score.

With all the bogeys from the leaders, Ross Fisher at two under par is now just two back from Glover and one back from Barnes... and the Englishman has struck a stunning second shot to the impossibly difficult par-4 10th.

4.04pm - Woods now, standing over a 12-footer he's left himself from a very difficult pitch shot on 15 - and the ball is never anywhere close to going in. Does Tiger still have a chance ?

4.01pm - Hunter Mahan has three-putted 10 for a bogey, then gallingly has to watch Phil Mickelson finish off his tap-in for that miraculous escape!

Meanwhile, Glover's par putt runs 10ft past... but gutsily he holes the return to limit the damage. Ricky Barnes, likewise, rolls in his four-footer to save par.

The real worry for both Glover and Barnes isn't holing those putts, however; it's the fact that they're both playing badly enough that they need to hole them to keep it going.

4pm - You could literally just watch Mickelson hit pitch shots all day and not get bored: his stunning recovery on 10 runs past the flag and, incredibly, spins back to three feet.

On the ninth, Lucas Glover's chip runs 50ft past the pin leaving him a length-of-the-green putt for a par; Barnes's effort is better, and he'll have a five-footer to stop his unwelcome run of bogeys.

3.58pm - Phil Mickelson's approach to the tenth is pulled well left, but he's ended up on the walkway - a critical lucky break - and he might yet have half a chance of saving par here.

Up on 15 Woods faces his bete noire, the hole he hates... and he's overclubbed! The shot was perfect, straight over the pin! He thought he was in birdie country, but now he's a tough shot to save par !

3.55pm - CRITICAL tee shot for Woods on 15: he's dropped three shots in three days on this hole, but this time he slams the ball straight down the middle - and Tiger really seems to fancy this now... Every inch of his body screams of his desire to win.

And as if to help out Woods - and the rest of the field - leader Lucas Glover has just hacked out well short, into thick rough, on the ninth.... while Ricky Barnes comes up half a club short at the same hole after a nice-looking shot, and will face a tricky chip from the thick stuff.

3.51pm - England's Ross Fisher has popped in his birdie on the ninth! He joins Mahan on two under par, one ahead of Woods and Mickelson.

And now Lucas Glover - who's been looking solid the last two holes - has driven into thick rough up the right side of the ninth.

3.48pm - Woods rolls in the putt! The world number one is under par for the first time this week!

3.46pm - Barnes's very tentative, awkward looking par putt is never close, and that's four bogeys in a row now for the third-round leader.

Lucas Glover has found the front of the green on the eighth, left himself four feet for par, and has just finished it off to stay comfortably ahead.

3.42pm - And now ROSS FISHER plays a stunning approach to two feet on the ninth! It's all kicking off at last!

Meanwhile over on the 8th, Ricky Barnes's pitch shot after a woeful tee shot is poor, and he's got 15ft from the fringe to rescue par...

...and ahead on the 10th Mike Weir has just almost holed his second shot! The ball ran on a little, but he's in with a chance of a birdie to get to two under.

3.41pm - TIGER NAILS IT TO THREE FEET ON THE 14TH!!! IS THIS THE START OF THE CHARGE?

3.37pm - Tiger's eagle putt breaks more than he thought it would, but that'll be a birdie and back to level par for the defending champion.

And back on the ninth, Lefty pops in his birdie!

3.35pm - Phil Mickelson finally does something good by hitting a fabulous second shot to two feet on the ninth. He needs to pop that one in to get back to one under par... and if he does so, then Lefty has every chance of pulling this win off.

3.30pm - Barnes hits his simple bunker shot well wide of the mark, and will have 15ft left for par - but up on the 13th Tiger Woods has just earned himself a chance at an eagle with a lovely second shot to the par-5!

Glover misses his birdie chance on seven; but with Barnes missing his par putt it's Glover who leads on his own now.

Fantastic putt by David Duval rolls in for a birdie on the eighth. Duval isn't out of it yet - and a few more putts like that could change everything.

3.28pm - Massive shame for McIlroy - he misses that putt. That really had to go in.

Up on the seventh Ricky Barnes has just found the front bunker after what didn't look too bad a shot - but Lucas Glover is suddenly showing nerves of steel, and lashed a terrific shot from the light rough onto the green and 20ft away.

3.25pm - Rory McIlroy has hit a glorious approach on the sixth to five feet - if he knocks that in he'll be level par, and quite honestly with the way things are going that might not be too far off the winning score!

This is unbelievable!

3.19pm - Lucas Glover misses that nice-looking birdie chance with a very shaky-looking putting stroke, while Ricky Barnes notches up another bogey after his two chops out of that thick rough.

That's the lead back to just two shots for this pair. It's sad for them, but in all honesty good for the championship that the expected capitulation is under way.

Up on the seventh there's more trouble for David Duval, messing about in the trees - it can't be easy for playing partner Ross Fisher to keep his concentration. And there you go: Fisher finds sand and can't rescue himself, dropping back to one under.

And on the eighth hole, Hunter Mahan blasts his long birdie putt miles past - it'll be a tough par from there...

3.18pm - There's a total lack of movement from the other Brits, with Oliver Wilson and Lee Westwood both two over for the day; Sergio Garcia is disappointing as well.

Up on the 12th, Tiger has another birdie putt - and once again, it doesn't go anywhere near the hole. Looks like it's just not happening for the world number one...

3.17pm - Rory McIlroy saves a good par on the fifth. If he can get in the clubhouse at one or two under - which would mean two or three closing birdies - he could yet see the rest of the field come back to him.

3.15pm - Phil Mickelson's challenge seems all over as he hits an appalling chip on the seventh, and misses his 12ft par putt .

Ricky Barnes, meanwhile, is in all sorts of grief: he tries to do a bit too much from awful thick rough on the sixth, and has ended up hacking the ball into another horrific lie.

3.12pm - Rory Mcllroy has just birdied the fourth to get back to one over par, while up on the sixth Glover hits a glorious approach and will have a good chance at a birdie.

3.09pm - Ricky Barnes has done it again: yet another big hook, and he's in thick rough on the left on the sixth hole... At this rate he'll have lost the lead by the time we get to the turn.

Lucas Glover makes no such mistake, hitting an iron to the centre of the fairway.

And there's great news for Ross Fisher: he completes his sand save, and he is still right in this championship at two under par.

3.07pm - The sixth is playing short and is a birdie chance today - but Ross Fisher finds sand with his approach, and has four feet left to save par...

3.05pm - Mike Weir holes his bunker shot on seven to get back to two under par, while Ricky Barnes hits a nice bunker shot. Barnes and Glover both escape with bogeys... but the field are getting closer, and their games are looking distinctly wobbly ...

3.03pm - Lucas Glover finds his ball plugged under the lip on the fifth, and has to take a drop back in the bunker! He plays a good recovery, though, and has a chance at a bogey.

2.58pm - Hunter Mahan has got that shot straight back with a birdie on the sixth to go back to three under... and back on the fifth, Ricky has just dunked his third shot - a pitch - into thick grass short of the green. It'll be a tricky bogey from there , let alone a par...

2.55pm - Ross Fisher ends up with a bogey on five, Mickelson has to take a drop and is putting for an unlikely par , Tiger has bogeyed the 10th... it's all going horribly wrong for lovers of exciting finishes.

Or is it? Ricky Barnes has just snap-hooked his approach to the fifth miles into the trees - a truly atrocious golf shot - and playing partner Lucas Glover dumps his approach in the front bunker. It's not over yet, folks!

2.50pm - I don't know what it is - maybe golf pros just don't like Mondays - but scoring on extra days in these situations always seems to be pretty lousy. It's as if golfers have an in-built birdie shut-off system - there's a notable absence of any birdies and cheering from across the course.

2.47pm - Barnes's chip at the fourth leaves him 15ft for birdie, and he safely two-putts for par.

On the next, however, Ross Fisher's pitch to the green spins back to leave him a long, nasty putt for par.

2.46pm - Now Phil Mickelson is in trouble: playing an iron off the tee for safety on the sixth, he totally mishits and ends up pushing his ball into some knee-high vegetables.

2.45pm - Tiger has just hit a shocking approach to the tenth that looks like a certain bogey.

And Hunter Mahan has just bogeyed the fifth to leave Ross Fisher in sole possession of third place - but Fisher drove in the trees at that same hole, and needs a great pitch and putt to save par.

And 2.42pm - Further down the leaderboard Graeme McDowell has made no more progress today - though he's making steady pars - and fellow Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is similarly making no more headway.

It's a shame for McIlroy that they couldn't have carried on playing under floolights last night with the way he was hitting it.

2.40pm - Phil Mickelson faces a long birdie putt on the fifth, and he hits it right on line but leaves it a few inches short...

2.38pm - Barnes hits a big hook to the fourth green - but luckily he was aiming to the right to start with, and the ball ends up running just through the green. He's still a chance of a birdie to extend his lead.

2.36pm - Aarargh! What's Ross Fisher doing? He pulls his eagle putt five feet left of the cup, leaving a tough birdie... It's incredible how well he's doing considering how average his putting has been this week.

But here he goes with it now anyway... and he's ROLLED IT IN! Gutsy stuff from the Englishman, he's three under par and still right in this tournament!

2.33pm - Woods hits his birdie putt on nine - but it doesn't even go close to the hole...

Back on the fourth, Lucas Glover's foot slips during his tee shot, and he's miles into the rubbish - that's sad to see.

2.31pm - Come on ROSS FISHER!!! The Englishman has just ripped a brilliant fairway wood to the heart of the par-5 fourth green - and he has a putt for an eagle!

2.28pm - Barnes hits a lovely bunker shot on three to look like saving par, but Lucas Glover's pitch leaves him a horrid 30-footer... that misses just to the right.

Barnes rolls in his four-footer - solid, but there are definite signs of wobbling...

Tiger Woods, meanwhile, hits a great approach to nine that is two feet from being stone dead - but hits a bump just short and runs up to 18ft.

2.24pm - Cheers for Lefty! Phil Mickelson escapes from a horrendous plugged bunker lie on the fourth to 12ft, and sinks a terrific par-saving putt... those with bets on the world number two can breathe again.

Tiger Woods, incidentally, is in the centre of the ninth fairway about to his his approach. And boy, does he need to start making things happen.

For our money, a finishing total of four under par has an outside chance of being enough for a play-off, while six under will very probably be enough for victory for any of these players. Leave your thoughts, as ever, in the comments box down below...

2.22pm - Mickelson is making a mess of the birdie-chance par-5 fourth - though his playing partner Hunter Mahan sets up a cast iron birdie with a wonderful bunker shot.

Back on the par-3 third, though, both Ricky Barnes and Lucas Glover have missed the green and left themselves tough recovery shots. Could they both come back to the field here?

2.18pm - Duval ends up with a treble-bogey six which drops him back over par, and likely out of contention - but Fisher finishes off a great par after leaving himself a tough second shot.

2.15pm - Big trouble for David Duval here on the par-3 third, as he draws a horror movie lie up in the lip of a bunker - and can only hack it out of his lie.

Up on the eighth Woods lags his putt up to the side of the hole for a safe par. Will Tiger charge today? Wil Phil get things going?

Duval's playing partner Ross Fisher has a 20-footer for birdie - but Duval is still messing about here, having missed the green with his second bunker shot and chipped back. He now has 12ft for a double-bogey...

2.11pm - Very nice shot by Tiger Woods on the 8th puts him safely on the green of the very long, tough par-3 - the tee is right back today. It won't be easy, but he's an outside chance fo a birdie there.

It's still hard to believe how Barnes got away with that drive on the second. Last night he was staring in disbelief at his lie, seemingly wondering how he'd get it out of the thick stuff, but this morning he's calmly wafted it onto the green and two-putted for par.

2.06pm - Phil Mickelson has just found the third green - but back on the second, Ricky Barnes has produced a miracle to get his ball on the green.

That seems amazing, he seemed dead and buried from there last night...

2pm - We're back at Bethpage, and this time it looks like we might get the tournament finished at last!

Ricky Barnes and Lucas Glover are unlikely leaders; will they falter? Or will one of them produce an extraordinary victory?

  2. Well done young Glover, a bit nerve jangling but he kept his cool. It's good to see new winners, stops the boredom.
It will be the 'Tiger was so close' theme now. The fact is it took him three and a half rounds to get below par and then he never looked like holding on to it. It was just that the young lads, particularly Barnes, played nervous golf that made Tiger's 'great' revival look so decent. Tiger was never going to win this one, he played poor golf for four days.
I endorse voiceofreason's comments, Duval had a mixed final round but great to see him up there again. DV was the only American golfer who had the courtesy to congratulate the Europeam Ryder cup team last time he played in the event, and enjoyed sharing a beer in the locker room. Keep it up, David.
Well done again, young Glover, it was your day and you deserved it.

  3. Congratulations to David Duval who has had a torrid time of it for a long while. Let's hope he can build on this.
